Kiran (Juhi Chawla) is a college student who is on her way home for Holi break one year when she hears a man serenading her across the campus in Simla. Her heart swells as she assumes that her boyfriend, Sunil (Sunny Deol), has come to meet her and escort her home. Unfortunately, it isn't Sunil, but Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), a classmate with a crush on her. The opening number, Jaado Teri Nazar, sets the tone for Darr, in which Rahul pursues Kiran with increasingly desperate vigor, much to the chagrin of Kiran, Sunil, her brother Vijay (Anupam Kher) and his wife Poonam (Tanvi Azmi) with whom Kiran lives.

Virendra "Viren" Pratap Singh (Anil Kapoor) travels to Rajasthan with his governess, affectionately called Dai Jaa (Waheeda Rehman). He meets the beautiful Pallavi (Sridevi) and falls in love with her. However, she is older than he is, though this does not bother Viren. During a property dispute and a court case, Pallavi's father dies of a heart attack. She is shattered and goes into isolation. At the wake, Viren goes to console her, when she runs past him—towards Siddhharth, the man she loves. Rohit (Rishi Kapoor) meets Chandni (Sridevi) at a wedding of her relative and falls instantly in love with her. He pursues her relentlessly until she agrees to date him. Eventually they become engaged to be married. His family is very much against this because of the difference in their social status, but Rohit doesn't care. One day, Rohit calls Chandni and asks her to wait for him on the terrace of her house. As she's waiting, the afternoon's silence is broken by the roaring blades of a helicopter.
