Horace Parker, un jeune et riche égoïste, a accepté de financer un système de communication avec Mars à condition d'être crédité comme son inventeur. Un soir, il reste chez lui pour en étudier les plans plutôt que d'aller à une soirée avec Minnie, sa fiancée. Comme il s'endort, un personnage lui apparaît, qui se présente comme un messager en provenance de Mars, dont la mission est de convertir l'homme le plus égoïste de la Terre. Il montre à Horace la pauvreté qui règne dans les rues et lui fait entendre les reproches de Minnie à son sujet. As described in a film publication summary, the Stranger (Carey) comes to town of Broken Buckle to start a gambling hall. The Headlight, the existing gambling hall, is crooked, and the Stranger wants to start a straight one. He meets Zoe Whipple (Ferguson) who is attempting to reform the town and teaches school out of her home. Misunderstandings arise between the Stranger and Zoe that are brought about by Denver Red (Le Moyne), proprietor of the Headlight. After Zoe pleads with the Stranger not to start a new gambling den, the Stranger opens it to the public, but it turns out to be a new library and school. His first attempt at forgery is upon a dance program, and he forges Nina's name for the last waltz. He offers to save Nina's father from ruin by forging a check. He is discovered by the owner of the check, but instead of turning him in, Baron Hartfeld (Randolf) forces Jim to work for him for the next twenty years. Nina is engaged to Louis Percival (MacPherson), but through notes forged by Jim they become estranged. Nina ends up marrying James although she does not love him. As the twenty year period closes, Jim's daughter Louise is about to marry the son of an English banker that Jim is about to ruin. Just in time Percival, whom Jim has previously ruined, and Nina discover the forgery that separated them. Jim, realizing that he is trapped, ends it all by sinking a yacht after locking himself and his companions in the cabin. , 1h30
