À la manière typique d'une comédie délirante, l'intrigue est mise en mouvement par l'auteur Nicky Henderson, qui a atteint les palmarès des best-sellers avec son dernier tome, Why Marry a Latin? En recherchant son prochain livre à Rio De Janeiro, elle découvre "pourquoi" lorsqu'elle rencontre le bel auteur-compositeur Miguel Soares. En apprenant l'existence du livre de Nicky, Miguel décide de lui donner quelques leçons sur les affaires de cœur. Edward Everett Horton est également sur place, gazouillant à travers le rôle d'un buttinsky bien intentionné. When a traveling vaudeville show becomes stranded in the Middle East, their singer, Hazel Moon (Marilyn Maxwell), takes a job at a local cafe. Two of the show's prop men, Peter Johnson (Bud Abbott) and Harvey Garvey (Lou Costello), are hired as comedy relief, but their act unfortunately initiates a brawl. The two men, along with Hazel, wind up in jail (where Abbott and Costello perform the famous "Slowly I Turned" routine with a crazy derelict [Murray Leonard] with Pokomoko as the trigger word). They encounter Prince Ramo (John Conte), a sheik, who offers to help them escape if they agree to help him regain the throne that his Uncle Nimativ (Douglass Dumbrille) had usurped with the aid of two hypnotic rings.

The film focuses on the exploits of the vengeful Dr. Gustav Niemann (Boris Karloff), who escapes from prison. He is helped by the hunchback Daniel (J. Carrol Naish), for whom he promises to create a new, beautiful body. The two murder Professor Lampini (George Zucco), a traveling showman, and take over his horror exhibit. To exact revenge on Bürgermeister Hussman (Sig Ruman), who had once caused his imprisonment, Niemann revives Count Dracula (John Carradine). Dracula seduces Hussmann's granddaughter-in-law Rita (Anne Gwynne) and kills Hussmann himself, but in a subsequent chase, Niemann disposes of Dracula's coffin, causing the vampire to perish in sunlight.
