On a Los Angeles street, Officer Rawlins, a patrolman on his way home from work, stops a man he suspects of being a burglar and is shot and mortally wounded. The minor clues lead nowhere. In a country very similar to France under German military occupation, two people are murdered at the same moment. Ève is poisoned by her influential husband, who wants her money and her naïve younger sister, Lucette. Pierre, a worker and a leader of the resistance, is shot by an informer. Meeting in the afterlife, the two fall in love. As they were fated to do so, but prevented by others, they are granted 24 hours back on earth. Their first mission is to do a favour to a dead man who was worried about his young daughter. Then, after brief sex, they address unfinished business. Ève confronts her evil husband and tries to convince her sister of his treachery. Pierre goes to a meeting of resisters and tries to convince them that their organisation is compromised by traitors. The 24 hours are up and most of the time was spent not on enjoying and deepening their relationship, which was often edgy, but on efforts to help others. Back in the afterlife they agree to part.

Frank Enley (Van Heflin), returns home from World War II after surviving a German POW camp where the rest of his comrades had been murdered by guards during an escape attempt. The "war hero" is respected and praised for his fine character and good works in the California town of Santa Lisa, where he, his young wife and baby had settled after moving from the East. What his wife doesn't know is that Frank relocated them to get away from Joe Parkson (Robert Ryan), once his best friend, who also lived through the ordeal, though he was left with a crippled leg. In exchange for food, Frank had alerted the Nazi camp commander to their escape plans, thinking wrongly that the men would not be punished, and Joe is now determined finally to exact justice on Frank, whose location he has learned from a newspaper story commending him for his civic endeavors.

The Stooges are moving men assigned to move furniture out of the haunted Smorgasbord Castle. All goes well at first, outside of a few scares, until a clanking suit of armor inhabited by the ghost of Peeping Tom (voiced by Phil Arnold) scares the hapless Stooges, until he convinces them that he is, in fact, a friendly spirit. After finally gaining their trust, Tom tells the trio the story of his watching Lady Godiva (Nancy Saunders), only to get a pie in the face. In turn, his ghost is cursed and trapped inside the suit of armor, having been trapped for a thousand years.
