The documentary In the Mirror of Maya Deren (Im Spiegel der Maya Deren, 2002) is a film about avant garde filmmaker Maya Deren (1917-1961) by Austrian film maker Martina Kudlacek. It is based on the biography The Legend of Maya Deren.
The soundtrack to this documentary was made by the avant-garde composer John Zorn.

Synopsis

Ce documentaire retrace la biographie surprenante de l'artiste légendaire Maya Deren. Née à Kiev en 1917, elle devint un personnage central de l'avant-garde américaine après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Surtout connue pour son travail anticonformiste dans le film expérimental, elle était très active dans d'autres domaines politiques et culturels : elle fut poète, danseuse, et par-dessus tout une ethnographe renommée et une adepte des pratiques vaudou.

Elena moves to New York with the same dream her mother had: to become a movie actress.
