Parthiban Kanavu (Tamil: பார்த்திபன் கனவு; Telugu: పార్తిబన్ కల; Sinhalese: පර්තිබන් සිහිනය; English: Parthiban's Dream) is a 1960 Black-and-white Historical fiction multilingual directed by D. Yoganand. The film starred Vyjayanthimala, Gemini Ganesan and S. V. Ranga Rao in the lead with Ragini, S. V. Subbiah, Kumari Kamala, T. S. Balaiah, P. S. Veerappa and S. A. Ashokan forms an ensemble cast.

The film was based on 1942 Historical novel Parthiban Kanavu written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The film also had actor K. Balaji in special appearance and actress B. Saroja Devi as extra.

Parthiban Kanavu was produced in three language, Tamil, Telugu and Sinhala by V. Govindarajan with his Jubilee Films. Upon release the film was well received by critics where it won Best Feature Film in Tamil at the 8th National Film Awards. With its huge budget, the film failed to perform well at box office where it ended as box office bomb.

In 2011, the movie was in controversy along with Veerapandiya Kattabomman and Thillaanaa Mohanambal for its historical inaccuracies.

Synopsis

7th century AD. Parthiban, the Chola King, dies in battle leaving incomplete his desire to be free from the yoke of the Pallavas. His son Vikraman (Gemini Ganesh) is determined to fulfill his father's dream. He is arrested by the Pallava king, Narasimhavarman and exiled to an island where he is chosen the king. Though he has banished him, Narasimhavarman in fact cares a great deal about Vikraman as the latter loves his daughter Kundhavi (Vyjayanthimala). Vikraman returns to the mainland to see his mother and is attacked by robbers. Narasimhavaraman, in the guise of a sage and who has been helping Vikraman constantly rescues him. Vikraman weds Kundhavi and rules over the independent Chola Kingdom thus fulfilling his father's dream.

Prithvirajan (MGR) falls in love when he sees a portrait of princess Samyuktha (Padmini). To insult him, her father Jayachandran (MG Chakrapani) instals his statue at the entrance to the palace hall where the ‘swayamvara' (a ceremony to choose the bridegroom) by the princess is to take place. Maharajah of Malava Kingdom was killed. The kingdom is ruled by his younger brother Rudrasimha (S. V. Ranga Rao). The son heirs the kingdom is Jayasimha (N. T. Rama Rao). Vijayasimha (Kanta Rao) is son of Rudrasimha. Rudrasimha tried to kill Jayasimha twice and to occupy the kingdom completely. Knowing about this, Jayasimha overnight ran away from the kingdom. Maharajah of neibouring kingdom was arrested by the enemies and escapes with his daughter. Jayasimha saves the Princess (Waheeda Rehman) and later releases Maharajah. They love each other. He lives in the house of valiant Ranadhir (Gummadi) with the name of Bhavani. Ranadhir has a son Subuddhi (Relangi) and a daughter Kalindi (Anjali Devi). Kalindi loves Jayasimha. Senadhipati (Rajanala) tries to control the Princess. Rudrasimha and Senadhipati jointly plan to arrest the Maharajah and Jayasimha. After knowing Jayasimha considers her as his sister, Kalindi dies in attempting to save Jayasimha. Jayasimha with the help of Vijayasimha exterminates the enemies. Rudrasimha, the traitor is killed by his son Vijayasimha. Jayasimha becomes the Maharajah and rules both the kingdoms.
