It was the first film role for Toshirō Mifune, later to become one of Japan's most famous actors. Mifune and the other main actor in the film Takashi Shimura, later became long-term collaborators of film director Akira Kurosawa.
Synopsis
The story follows the fate of three bank robbers (Mifune, Takashi Shimura, and Yoshio Kosugi) on the run from the police, who hide out high up in the snowy Japanese mountains in a remote lodge inhabited by an old man, his granddaughter and an intrepid mountaineer (Akitake Kono) trapped there by a recent blizzard. They don’t know that the men are criminals, and a tense standoff starts to unfold.Actors

Sukezaemon est un bandit recherché pour piraterie par les autorités japonaises. Arrivant à s’échapper de son exécution, il affirme devant tout ses hommes vouloir devenir un véritable pirate. Mais le sort en décidera autrement puisque une tempête vient détruire ce rêve, réduisant le bateau en pièces, tuant tout l’équipage. Il se retrouve seul avec un trésor et deux hommes. Et une seconde fois, la malchance s’abat sur lui, dans cette détresse il croise le grand Pirate Noir qui ne se prive pas de tuer les deux hommes et de lui voler son trésor. Délaissé en pleine mer, il dérive vers une terre inconnue où un vieillard lui vient en aide. Il apprend que la situation du pays est plutôt mauvaise, en effet le roi prend en otage les femmes sans jamais les libérer. Mais c’est en apercevant la princesse et ses bijoux, qu’il décide d’aller voir d’un peu plus près la réalité.

It is 1860, and the era of the Tokugawa shogunate is coming to a close. A rōnin, or masterless samurai, wanders into a small town divided by a gang war between two gangsters, Seibei and Ushitora. Ushitora used to be Seibei's right-hand man, until Seibei decided that his son Yoichiro would succeed him. Tazaemon, the silk merchant and mayor, backs Seibei, while Tokuemon the sake brewer is allied with Ushitora. Gonji, the owner of an inn, advises the stranger to leave while he can, but after sizing up the situation, the rōnin tells Gonji that the town would be better off with both sides dead, and that he intends to stay.

A wealthy executive named Kingo Gondo (Toshiro Mifune) is in a struggle to gain control of a company called National Shoes. Nine young samurai, including his nephew, believe that the lord chamberlain, Mutsuta, is corrupt after he tore up their petition against organised crime and said maybe he himself was behind the crimes. One of them tells the superintendent of this and he agrees to intervene. As the nine meet secretly at a shrine and discuss their problem, a ronin (Mifune) emerges from another room where he has been resting. The ronin has overheard their plans, and suggests that the superintendent is in fact the real corrupt official. While at first the samurai are insulted by his claims, they soon find themselves surrounded by the superintendent's men, proving that he was correct. The ronin hits a few of the attackers and bluffs their leader into leaving, taking only a small amount of money in reward to buy food because he is starving; however, after realizing that Mutsuta and his family must now be in danger, he decides to help the samurai bring down the corrupt officials.

Japon, automne 1573. Le Château d'Odani du clan Azai est assiégé par l'armée d'Oda Nobunaga. Trois soldats du camp assiégé connaissent des fortunes diverses. Hayatenosuke promet de tout faire pour survivre à l'affrontement à venir et confie Kano à Tachibana Jurota un soldat un peu couard qui ne veut pas mourir au combat et tous deux s’enfuient du château la nuit précédent la bataille décisive. Le lendemain l'armée du clan Azai est défaite, Kagami Yakeiji est fait prisonnier mais parvient à tuer son geôlier et à s'enfuir. Sasa Hayatenosuke est quant à lui blessé au combat. Il est recueilli et soigné par Oryo, qui avec son père est à la tête d'une bande de pillards qui dépouille les soldats tués au combat.
