The Magician is a 1926 horror film directed by Rex Ingram about a magician's efforts to acquire the blood of a maiden for his experiments to create life. It was adapted by Ingram from the novel The Magician by W. Somerset Maugham. It stars Alice Terry, Paul Wegener and Iván Petrovich.

Synopsis

In the Latin Quarter of Paris, sculptor Margaret Dauncey is injured when the top of the huge statue of a faun (see poster) she is working on breaks off and falls on her. After successful surgery by brilliant Dr. Arthur Burdon saves her from paralysis, she and Burdon fall in love.

Madariaga "The Centaur" (Pomeroy Cannon), a harsh but popular Argentine landowner, has a German son-in-law whom he dislikes and a French one whose family he openly favors. He is particularly fond of his grandson Julio (Rudolph Valentino), with whom he often carouses at seedy dives in the Boca district of Buenos Aires. In one of these bars, the movie's famous tango sequence occurs. A man and a woman (Beatrice Dominguez) are dancing the tango. Julio strides up and asks to cut in. The woman stares at Julio alluringly. The man brushes him off, and they resume dancing. Julio then challenges the man and strikes him, knocking him into some tables and out of the scene. Julio and the woman then dance a dramatic version of the tango that brings cheers from the people in the establishment. Following the dance, the woman sits on Julio's lap. Madariaga then slides to the floor, drunk. The woman laughs at Madariaga. Julio casts her aside in scorn and helps his grandfather home.

Lady Winifred se marie secrètement à Michael Wain, un garde-chasse. Lorsque Lord Altcar, qui voulait donner sa fille à Lord Burford pour couvrir ses dettes de jeu, apprend l'existence de ce mariage, il fait battre Wain et le congédie en le prévenant contre tout retour. Il rachète les hypothèques qui pèsent sur le manoir des Altcar et est sur le point de les faire expulser lorsqu'il apprend que Dora, la fille de Winifred qui avait élevée dans un couvent, est fiancée à un artiste américain, John Gillespie, mais que le même Lord Burford cherche à l'épouser comme il l'avait voulu pour sa mère. Pour détruire l'amour que Dora porte à John, Burford fait attacher un nu à la place du portrait que John faisait de Dora. Le cœur brisé, Dora s'enfuit dans son couvent dans les Alpes, ce qui a pour conséquence de rapprocher Lord Altcar et Lady Winifred. Burford, qui a découvert où se cache Dora, tente de la faire enlever, mais sa famille arrive à la rescousse.
