Le docteur Alberto Robles arrive en ville pour diriger un hôpital. Au même moment, il reçoit un paquet, accompagné d'une lettre. Le curé du village où il vient d'exercer lui communique des nouvelles de Soledad, une jeune femme amoureuse de lui et qui a connu une destinée tragique. La lecture du courrier bouleverse le docteur qui, finalement, refuse ses nouvelles fonctions les considérant, désormais, comme parfaitement futiles. Estimant sa présence au village indispensable, il choisit d'y retourner.

In the Havana port, two mulatto children, Mateo (Ricardo Román) and Caridad (Ninón Sevilla) grow together. She is the daughter of a white man who died in a shipwreck, and a black laundress of African origin. Over the years, Mateo falls for Caridad, but she is in love with a Mexican captain, Martin (Pedro Armendáriz), who accidentally met her at the port. The captain was also in love with Caridad and offers live together and she accepts. Caridad work in a cabaret in the port and the owner, Guevara (René Cardona), are attracted to the girl, and in a moment of jealousy, tries to kill Martin. Martin falls in financial trouble and have to mortgage his boat to Guevara. When Martin returns to Veracruz, Mexico, Guevara feels himself like the new owner of Caridad.

The film opens in a church where a man named Francisco sees an attractive young woman from across the room. They have seen each other many times before, and she seems reluctant to engage him. He works up the courage to speak with her, but she seems uninterested, and insists that they can never speak to each other again. Francisco follows her to a restaurant and sees her meeting with Raul, a close friend of his.

Cabrera, riche propriétaire, cherche à vendre son immeuble qu'il loue. Il doit procéder à des expulsions, mais les locataires, aux conditions de vie précaires, se révoltent. Cabrera fait alors appel à Pedro, dit "La Brute", un employé aux abattoirs, homme rustre et costaud, chargé de les effrayer. Cabrera lui demande de quitter son travail et l'installe chez lui. Paloma, la jeune femme de Cabrera ne tarde pas à tomber sous le charme viril de Pedro. Un soir, Pedro frappe l'un des locataires, qui, déjà malade, meurt peu après. Bientôt repéré, Pedro est pourchassé par les locataires furieux. Il se réfugie chez une jeune fille, Meche. Ni Meche, ni Pedro ne font le rapprochement avec l'homme que Pedro a tué, qui s'avère être le père de la jeune fille.
