Vaastav (Marathi: वास्तव, English: The Reality) is a 1999 Hindi crime drama written and directed by Mahesh Manjrekar and starring Sanjay Dutt and Namrata Shirodkar. It also features Sanjay Narvekar, Mohnish Behl, Paresh Rawal, Reema Lagoo and Shivaji Satam in supporting roles.

"The Reality" as described by the film's tagline, refers to the harsh realities of life in the Mumbai underworld. The film is said to be loosely based on the life of Mumbai underworld gangster Chota Rajan.

The film was very well received by both critics and audiences it is the second highest grossing film of 1999 and is often regarded by many as one of Sanjay Dutt's best performances. The film was extremely successful both in India and overseas. It was nominated for and won many awards. Over the years it has become to being referred to as a Cult Film.

The film was followed by the 2002 sequel Hathyar.

Synopsis

Vaastav opens with a family performing the annual rites of a dead person on the beach. When the young son of the deceased asks his grandmother all about the deceased, she begins to narrate the story.

Hathyar is a narrative which probes into the household of Raghunath (Sanjay Dutt), a dreaded gangster. His bereaved son Rohit (Sanjay Dutt) has to face a lot of flak from the outside world, repeatedly reminding him of the stigma attached to his family because of his father's past. Just like his father, circumstances force Rohit to become a gangster and he gets the name Boxer Bhai. Rohit has weaknesses, he cannot stand any woman being called a prostitute, because his mom, Sonu was one, and he has fallen hard for a married woman, Gauri (Shilpa Shetty), who is enduring a marriage with a phsycially abusive spouse. Rohit snatches her out of this abusive relationshisp and remarries her. But Rohit's problems are far from over. There is a change in the political scenario and Rohit does not find support from any godfather. He is ordered to be arrested - dead or alive.

The film is the story of Govind Narang (Sunil Shetty), an honest and chivalrous man from a small village in Punjab. He falls in love with Sudha (Sushmita Sen), but marries Masterji's daughter, Pushpa (Suman Ranganathan), to save her from public ridicule. Pushpa was impregnated by a police officer who refuses to marry her. She does not love Govind and hates Sudha with a passion. Together with her brother, Laxman (Sharad Kapoor), Pushpa tries to expel Sudha from of the village, but is unsuccessful. When Laxman finds out about Pushpa's infidelity, he poisons her. After his wife's death, Govind relocates to Mumbai with his sister, Ratna (Shraddha Nigam). He meets beautiful Gitika (Namrata Shirodkar) and they fall in love. One day, as Govind defends the honor of a young girl from the brother of a hoodlum, Johnny Handsome (Sharat Saxena), he generates hatred and animosity. Johnny is humiliated by Govind and swears vengeance with the help of Sadanand Kutty (Gulshan Grover) and Karim Khan Toofani (Govind Namdeo). On the other hand, Govind befriends Ram Sevak (Alok Nath), and with his help and assistance of a landowner arranges the purchase of a large plot of land so that hawkers and small shop-owners could set up their businesses. But nothing goes according to plan. The plot of land and the owner turn out to be fake, Ram Sevak turns out to be in hand with the gangsters, and Govind gets all the blame; His sister is openly raped, and Govind himself gets seriously wounded, in broad daylight before the very eyes of the people he defended. Govind is then helped by Sudha, and he decides to teach everyone a lesson. He files an FIR against everyone in the neighbourhood who witnessed what happened to his sister except the culprits themseleves. When they are brought to court, he condemns everyone for their attitude, and then tells them to be brave and fight goondaism. Encouraged by this, the entire neighborhood decides to take on the gang. They attack the gangsters with bottles when they come to threaten them in the locality, and then move on to Johnny handsome's office, breaking everything and attacking all the goons. In join Govind and Sudha to attack the gangsters and arrest them. The criminals are sentenced and everything returns to normal. In the end, though on a happy note, Govind's sister marries a close friend of the family, and Govind agrees to marry Sudha.

On or about 12 May 2000, a truck gets stolen in Los Angeles, and the police bring in six men of South Asian origin for questioning. They are: Yashvardhan Rampal, known as 'Major' educated intelligent, unemployed, with an ailing wife who longs to return to India; Non-English speaking Jay Rehan, otherwise known as 'Ajju', a foul-mouthed, trigger-happy gangster; A out-of-work former nightclub bouncer, Marc Issak, whose girlfriend, Lisa, is a bar dancer, and who is known to get into fights due to his uncontrollable temper; A drug dealer, Raj Yadav, otherwise known as Bali, foul-mouthed, womanizer, stutterer, and alcoholic; Bali's sidekick, Maqbool Haider, otherwise known as Mac; White-collared Anand Mathur, alias Andy, recently separated from his wife, Renu, and longing to get back together with his son, who he cannot get custody of due to financial problems. The six confer in a cell, cite woes that even though the Italians have their Mafia, the Colombians have their Cartels, but the East Indian criminal community is yet to forge a Bhai-type organization, resulting in their getting pulled in as the usual suspects every time there is a crime involving a colored person. They plot to get back at the cops by robbing the American Services Bank, perhaps the only bank which has a majority of its clientele employed by the city police. They plan and carry out this caper quite successfully, but when they exit the bank, they find themselves surrounded by the police. After a shoot-out, They do manage to escape and meet in a secret hideout, to not only share the loot, but also try and find out who betrayed them. Ajju abducts police interrogator, Detective MacQuarrie, and it is through him they learn that their informer is one of them – and they must find out his identity, kill him, then divide the loot amongst them and disperse. The only problem is the informer is not willing to come forward – and the gangsters end up suspecting each other and their respective motives.
