Varakatnam is a 1968 Telugu film directed by N. T. Rama Rao. It was awarded National Film Award for the best film in Telugu language category in 1968. The film is based on the widely prevalent custom of "Varakatnam" meaning Dowry.

When the gardener's son 'Thota' Ramudu beats Surasena at a concert for irritating the common people, he is summoned by the king to the court. His boldness leaves a considerable impression, but when Ramudu declares his love for Indu a day before his death sentence for meeting Indu secretly, the king is reminded of the astrologers' prediction that only a brave man can save her from a wicked sorcerer. He then challenges Ramudu to amass wealth equal to that of his in order to marry Indu, to which Ramudu agrees. He is released from prison.
Varghese (N. Govindan Kutty) is a planter who lives with his wife Elizabeth (Savitri) and daughter Beena (Sujatha) in the tea estates owned by him. Following his son's demise, Varghese starts drinking in his depression and entices his wife into it. Elizabeth becomes an alcoholic.
