Sati Gujaral is a music teacher in a school for Tibetan children run by the Tibetan government-in-exile and her husband Gopi Gujaral is a doctor in a government hospital. Their only son, Ashok is a pilot with the Indian Air Force. The atmosphere is tense with the possibility of a war between India and Pakistan. Ashok calls home unerringly every week bringing joy and some comfort to the anxious mother. One day she gets a mistaken call from a young boy trying desperately to reach his mother. The anxiety is compounded when her own son's call doesn't arrive at the appointed hour. The next call reveals that the child has died.

Seth Harikrishan, the industrialist had as his heir, his only grandson Prem. The grandfather's only desire was to see the bride of his grandson. When he fell seriously ill, his friend and doctor Farid prevailed upon Prem to bring his girl friend Rita, whom he wanted to marry. The story revolves around a tribal caste called the Thakar. Nagya (Mohan Agashe) is a drummer who has a passion for being a "pure one" (punyavant). He meets Chindhi (Smita Patil), who has abandoned her husband as she considers him useless. They both fall in love and strive hard to be united. Once when Nagya goes to jungle for wood-cutting, a queen honey bee attacks him and one of his eyes is injured. He decides to take revenge. The beehives are located high on a nearby difficult to climb peak {Lingoba}. He decides to cut all the beehives so that the queen-bee runs away. Meanwhile, Chindhi becomes pregnant with Nagya, but she still supports his dangerous attempt to climb the peak. Nagya then climbs the peak and cuts the hives. Chindhi is waiting at the base of the peak, but the disturbed honey-bees attack her and she dies in the incident. Nagya, in search of Queen honey-bee, loses his own queen[wife] in the end. This is a classic paradox, where he succeeds (Jait re jait, means WIN-WIN) in his revenge, but loses wife.

Kondayya (Chandramohan) and Seetalu (Rameshwari) work in a touring theatre in a village Kurabalakota and in love. While essentially illiterate, they love watching movies and learn to recite the film dialogues and songs. A film producer who comes to the village and makes a false promise to make Seetalu as heroine in the films. Seetalu goes to Hyderabad along with Kondayya. After facing many difficulties, with the help of painter Sridhar, Seetalu finally becomes a heroine. Her success brings her relatives for want of her money. Kondayya slowly realizes that he cannot fit in that cine urban culture. He returns to the village. How the young lovers unite is the rest of the drama.

Deepak (Jeetendra) is a truckdriver who gives a lift to a famous singer Aasha (Reena Roy) when her vehicle breaks down. They become friends. He is already in love with Mala (Rameshwari), whom he marries. Aasha wishes him well calling him "dost" (friend), even though she has fallen in love with him. Deepak has an accident, and everyone believes that he is dead. His grieving mother tells a pregnant Mala to go away. Mala goes home to her father, but he dies. Upset with everything in her life, she jumps from a bridge into the water. She is saved by members of a temple community but finds that she lost her sight. She gives birth and names her daughter Deepamala, combining her and her husband's names. Her husband turns out to be alive. He comes home and finds his mother overjoyed to see him. She tells him that Mala had committed suicide. He becomes depressed. Aasha re-enters his life and helps him overcome his depression. They get engaged. They become acquainted with Deepamala, now a little girl, selling little God's statutes on the street. They are completely enchanted by her, even though they don't know that she is really Deepak's daughter. Aasha meets Mala and tells her they'll pay for her eye operation, so she can regain her sight. Aasha also invites her and Deepamala to the wedding. After she regains her sight from the operation, she goes to Aasha's wedding and is shocked to see Deepak. She quickly leaves, not wanting to disrupt Aasha and Deepak's lives. Mala's friend (Girish Karnad) tells Deepak that Mala is still alive and that Deepamala is actually his daughter. Aasha cancels the wedding and calls him "dost" (friend) and tells him to go and reunite with his wife and daughter, which he does. Aasha goes back on stage permanently to sing her signature song "Shisha Ho Ya Dil Ho, Aakhir Toot Jata Hai," which translates into "Whether it's glass or a heart, it will inevitably break.

Naram Garam is the story of Kusum (Swaroop Sampat) and her father (AK Hangal) who are left homeless due to non-repayment of debts of the local money lender. They are helped by Ramprasad (Amol Palekar), who is in love with Kusum. Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), Ramprasad's employer, who is feared by his family members and employees, but is himself terrified of his own mother-in-law (Dina Pathak). Ramprasad helps Bhavani Shankar get the possession of his ancestral home after a 53-year-long legal battle with a squatter and is therefore assigned the responsibility of getting the house back in shape so that it can be re-occupied. In the meanwhile, Kusum and her father come to the shelter of Ramprasad and start staying in the house. Ramprasad doesn't have a house of his own, hence decides to let them stay illegally until he can find an alternative.
