Synopsis
En Allemagne, la Française Lora, pour échapper à l'emprise de son amant et mauvais génie Herman, a trouvé un emploi de serveuse dans une brasserie de Cologne. Mais Herman la retrouve et lui demande de faciliter le rendez-vous qu'il a pris dans la brasserie pour une louche transaction monétaire. Les tractations se passent mal à cause de faux billets ; Herman poignarde son interlocuteur et entraîne Lora dans sa fuite.Actors

While traveling by rail, Miss Marple witnesses the strangling of a young woman in the carriage of an overtaking train. The local police can find no evidence to support her story, so she conducts her own investigation and, with the aid of her close friend Jim Stringer (Stringer Davis), comes to the conclusion that the body must have been thrown off the train near the grounds of Ackenthorpe Hall, which adjoins the railway line.

In 1942 Britain is trying hard to hold on to Malta while invasion seems imminent; Italians and Germans are regularly bombing the airfields and towns. The RAF fight to survive against the odds using the few fighter aircraft remaining on the island. Flight Lieutenant Peter Ross (Alec Guinness), an archaeologist in civilian life, is on his way to an RAF posting in Egypt but is stranded in Malta due to the air attacks. He is assigned to the RAF squadron there, being an experienced photo reconnaissance pilot.

Kees Popinga est fondé de pouvoir chez un marchand hollandais de fourniture de bateaux à Groningue avec une femme et deux enfants il s'est peu à peu enfoncé dans l'ennui. Un soir, son patron lui apprend que son entreprise va déposer son bilan pour faillite frauduleuse. Se voyant ruiné, Kees Popinga voit son petit univers s'effondrer. Il décide de fuir son univers un peu mesquin et de faire des avances à Pamela, la maîtresse de son patron. Celle-ci ne l'accueillant qu'avec un rire moqueur, Kees, blessé dans son amour propre, la tue en voulant la faire taire. Il n'a alors plus d'autre solution que de quitter la Hollande, il s'enfuit donc à Paris. Ce sera pour lui l'occasion de vivre une vie en complète opposition avec son existence petite-bourgeoise qu'il a connu jusqu'alors. Il côtoie prostituées et petits malfrats, jusqu'à se faire dévaliser par un pick-pocket. Après une tentative de suicide manquée qui le livre nu aux mains de la police, il se retrouve interné en hôpital psychiatrique.

Captain Hardt (Conrad Veidt), a World War I German U-boat commander, is ordered to lead a mission to attack the British Fleet at Scapa Flow. He sneaks ashore on the Orkney Islands to meet his contact, Frau Tiel (Valerie Hobson). Tiel has taken over the identity of local schoolteacher, Anne Burnett (June Duprez), who had been kidnapped by German agents. Hardt finds himself attracted to her, but Tiel shows no interest. The Germans are aided by a disgraced Royal Navy officer, the former Commander Ashington (Sebastian Shaw) who, according to Tiel, has agreed to aid the Germans after losing his command due to drunkenness, and Tiel implies that she has slept with Ashington to obtain his cooperation.

During World War II, the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete was occupied by the Nazis. British officers Major Patrick Leigh Fermor DSO (Dirk Bogarde) and Captain Bill Stanley Moss MC (David Oxley) of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) land on the island. With the help of the local Cretan resistance in April 1944, they kidnap General Kreipe (Marius Goring), the commander of the island. They take Kreipe across rough country to a secluded cove on the far side of the island, where they are picked up and taken to Cairo, the Middle East headquarters of British forces.

The film opens in 1900 as Roberto Colombo, an Italian-American attorney living in the Little Italy section of New York City, is killed by gangsters as he meets with a police officer to give information about an attempt to extort money from him. In 1950s Christchurch, New Zealand, a 14-year-old girl from a working-class family, Pauline Parker (Lynskey), befriends the more affluent English 15-year-old Juliet Hulme (Winslet) when Juliet transfers to Pauline's school. They bond over a shared history of severe childhood disease and isolating hospitalizations, and over time develop an intense friendship. Pauline admires Juliet's outspoken arrogance and beauty. Together they paint, write stories, make Plasticine figurines, and eventually create a fantasy kingdom called Borovnia. It is the setting of the adventure novels they write together, which they hope to have published and eventually made into films in Hollywood. Over time it begins to be as real to them as the real world. Pauline's relationship with her mother, Honora, becomes increasingly hostile and the two fight constantly. This angry atmosphere is in contrast to the peaceful intellectual life Juliet shares with her family. Pauline spends most of her time at the Hulmes', where she feels accepted. Juliet introduces Pauline to the idea of "the Fourth World", a Heaven without Christians where music and art are celebrated. Juliet believes she will go there when she dies. Certain actors and musicians are "saints" in this afterlife.
