1903. Le prix Nobel de physique est décerné pour la première fois à une femme, Marie Curie, ainsi qu'à son mari Pierre. Peu de temps après, Pierre meurt dans un tragique accident et Marie, alors trentenaire, doit s'occuper seule de leurs deux enfants. Mais loin de se laisser abattre, elle poursuit les travaux de recherche du couple dans un monde essentiellement masculin et devient la première femme titulaire d'une chaire à la Sorbonne, à Paris. Après une longue période de deuil, elle tombe amoureuse d'un homme marié, le physicien Paul Langevin. Leur relation éclate au grand jour et provoque un énorme scandale.

The film's events take place over several days and they are set in the present time in a large Polish city. The main character is a bandit, a Polish dres (a Polish chav) called "Strong" (Borys Szyc), who does not work or study, and who frequently gets into conflict with the law and is in love with Magda (Roma Gąsiorowska). The relationship is not going well. "Strong" is insanely jealous of Magda, but he does not avoid sexual contact with other women. Magda is a blonde keen on going to the solarium, obsessed with her alleged overweight and appreciating good cosmetics. She loves "Strong" and hates him at the same time, deceives and manipulates him. She uses the opportunity to have a good time and looking for a rich guy with who she could leave "to the better countries". Both of them take drugs. Their relationship resembles a continuous scuffle.

The film begins in 1985, when engineers involved in an industrial project to irrigate the Gobi Desert accidentally unearth a mysterious and apparently artificial "spool". When found to be made of a material unknown on Earth, the spool is circumstantially linked to the Tunguska explosion of 1908. The "spool" is seized on as evidence that the explosion, originally blamed on a meteor, was actually caused by a spaceship. Professor Harringway deduces the alien craft must have come from Venus. The spool itself is determined to be a flight recorder, and partially decoded by an international team of scientists led by Professor Sikarna and Dr. Tchen Yu. When radio greetings sent to Venus go unanswered, Harringway announces that a journey to Venus is Earth's only alternative. The recently completed Soviet spaceship Cosmostrator I (Kosmokrator in the original), intended to voyage to Mars, is redirected to Venus, a 30–31 day trip. During the voyage, Sikarna works furiously to translate the alien message on the disc using the ship's computer.
