Brussels, August 1999. Two teenagers from Guinea are found dead in the landing gear of a plane arriving from Conakry. Each year, thousands of young Africans risk their lives to flee the African continent. Shocked by this phenomenon, the Senegalese-born director Musa Dieng Kala returns to Dakar to try to understand why they do it. Montréal, temps présent. L'université est une véritable poudrière. Les membres de l'association étudiante, dirigée par deux leaders (Frédéric Pierre et Pierre-Antoine Lasnier) à couteaux tirés, grondent et menacent de déclencher la grève. Sourd à leurs revendicati ons, le recteur (Raymond Bouchard) tire en coulisses les ficelles d'un projet immobilier douteux. Dans sa classe, un professeur de cinéma passionné (Alexis Martin) tente de neutraliser un étudiant désaxé qui conteste sa méthode et le provoque sans relâche. Peu après que l'enseignant eut commis l'erreur de réagir physiquement à son persécuteur, la grève est déclenchée, coïncidant avec la tenue d'un banquet en l'honneur du recteur. La fille de ce dernier, mère célibataire toxicomane (Catherine de Léan), y débarque subitement, annonçant sans le savoir le grand malheur qui est sur le point de se produire.

In the 1930s, in the throes of the Great Depression, the government of Quebec relocated more than 80,000 citizens to found a new settlement in the virgin forests of Quebec’s Abitibi region. After enduring backbreaking work to clear the land, however, many left, seeking a better life in the city or as labourers for the large corporations that had come to exploit the North’s valuable resources. The Lalancette family, however, have persisted in forging their future on the land from one generation to the next, earning their keep from farming, and defying the constraints of globalization and the mining and forestry companies that control the area. Revisiting the heritage of Quebec filmmakers who documented Abitibi, following in the footsteps of Pierre Perrault, among others, this documentary traces a defining chapter of Quebec history and raises fundamental questions about regional development.
