Small Change is a comedy with a serious message, based around the daily lives of young children in Thiers, France. Scenes include a baby and a cat perilously playing on an open windowsill, a girl causing confusion with a bullhorn, a double date at the movie theater, a kid telling a dirty joke, a botched haircut, as well as many scenes about school life. Yet throughout this the difficulties and responsibilities faced by children appear, including the ongoing story of a boy's experience of an abusive home. Truffaut gives a message of resilience in the face of injustice, vocalized through one of the teachers. The story ends with a message of hope, the school closing for the summer vacation, and one of the key characters finding his first love at a summer camp.

Durant l'été 1958, Frédérique, 13 ans, et sa petite sœur Sophie, 8 ans, partent comme tous les ans en vacances à La Baule pour aller voir leur oncle Léon, leur tante Bella et leurs cousins. Mais cette année, Léna, leur mère, leur annonce qu'elle ne viendra que plus tard. Frédérique ne trouve pas cette situation normale. En effet, en réalité, Léna ne s'entend plus avec son mari Michel, qui, lui aussi, a décidé de ne pas venir en vacances dans un premier temps. Léna qui souhaite le divorce, est tombée amoureuse de Jean-Claude, un artiste. Les deux amoureux vont à la plage de La Baule, mais leur relation doit rester discrète, alors que, pendant ce temps, les enfants découvrent leurs premiers émois sentimentaux. Mais Michel et leurs enfants Frédérique et Sophie finiront par découvrir assez vite la réalité, avec ses allers-retours un peu étranges et sa nouvelle voiture dont Michel se demande à quoi elle peut bien lui servir.

The story begins with Nicolas at ten years old and dreading the school ski trip. Nicolas was worried that he wouldn't fit in with the other boys. His overprotective father decides to take Nicolas by himself instead of going with the group. En route, Nicolas and his father pass the aftermath of an apparently fatal car accident. Seeing police ahead while the traffic had stopped, Nicolas' father becomes nervous and conceals all loose items within the car in the trunk – and we see that Nicolas' travel bag is next to several matching briefcases. Nicolas subsequently forgets his bag in his father's car, increasing his awkwardness.

L'histoire raconte le drame d'une amitié brisée entre enfants. Une jeune fille de 12 ans se lie d'amitié avec un garçon qui lui semble plus intelligent et libre que ses camarades. Une amitié commence. La fille lui confie un secret : un rocher avec un écho. Mais lors d'une attaque par des voyous, elle est déçue car il la trahit en ne l'aidant pas, cherchant a obtenir la reconnaissance du groupe. Il ne l'obtient cependant pas davantage, et reste exclu et à l'écart. Retournant vers la fille, celle ci ne le chasse pas complètement, mais le lien d'amitié entre les deux enfants en garde les cicatrices, et ils ne redeviendront plus jamais complice comme auparavant.
