She made her film debut in 1947 and starred in several of Akira Kurosawa's early films such as Drunken Angel (1948), The Quiet Duel (1949), Stray Dog (1949), Scandal (1950), The Idiot (1951) and Seven Samurai (1954).

Monzo Kobayashi is a dime-novel writer. He goes to see the stage of Ranko Mizuki, a star of an all-girls'-operetta company known as Asakusa Revue. Monzo notices a creepy man sitting beside him who keeps his head slumped down and does not even look up when Ranko appears on stage. On the way home from the theater, Monzo encounters another creepy situation. A dwarf (inch-high samurai) with a child-sized body and a grown-up's head passes right by him and is carrying a woman's arm that has been sliced off from the shoulder. Being a writer, this strangely enhances his interest of this dwarf and he begins an investigation about dwarfs.

In the 1960s, two astronauts, Fuji and Glenn, are sent to investigate the surface of the mysterious "Planet X". There they encounter advanced and seemingly benevolent human-like beings called the Xiliens and their leader The Controller. The aliens usher the astronauts into their underground base, and moments later the surface is attacked by a creature the Xiliens call "Monster Zero", but which the astronauts recognize as King Ghidorah, a planet-destroying monster that had attacked Earth once before. The monster eventually leaves, but the Controller states that Ghidorah has been attacking repeatedly, forcing them to live underground in constant fear. He requests to borrow the Earth monsters Godzilla and Rodan to act as sentries against Ghidorah's attacks, in return for the cure for cancer (the English dub says the formula can cure any disease). The astronauts return to Earth and deliver the message.

"The Black Hair" (黒髪, Kurokami) was adapted from "The Reconciliation", which appeared in Hearn's collection Shadowings (1900). An impoverished swordsman living in Kyoto divorces his wife, a weaver, for a woman of a wealthy family to attain greater social status. He takes his new wife to his new position as a district governor. However, the swordsman's second marriage proves to be unhappy. À la fin des années 1950, les lois anti-prostitution entérinent la fermeture des maisons closes au Japon. M Nogami est directrice d'un centre de réinsertion pour anciennes prostituées au sein duquel se côtoient toute une galerie de femmes hautes en couleur. Parmi celles-ci, la jeune Kuniko est particulièrement motivée pour retrouver sa place dans la société japonaise. Avec l'aide de M Nogami, elle déniche un emploi dans une épicerie à Tokyo. Si dans les premiers temps tout se passe bien, tout change à partir du moment où sa condition d'ancienne prostituée est découverte. Elle subit alors l'hostilité et la suspicion de la part de la femme de l'épicier ainsi que des sollicitations d'habitués du magasin. Kuniko quitte son emploi et retourne au centre.

En effet, sa mère adoptive, ancienne geisha et professeur de musique, ne peut plus exercer depuis qu'elle a subi une attaque qui l'a laissée handicapée et il faut payer les frais d'hospitalisation de Yukio, son fils tombé gravement malade à Tokyo. Atteint de tuberculose, Yukio est revenu auprès des siens pour y passer ses derniers jours, soigné par Yoko, l'autre fille adoptive de la professeur de musique.
