Vikramaditya Motwane (born 6 December 1976) is an Indian film director, and screenwriter for films like Dev.D (2009) and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal (2007). His directorial debut Udaan (2010) was selected to compete in the 'Un Certain Regard’ category at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival and also won seven Filmfare awards. His latest effort is Lootera, a big-budget Bollywood period romance, released on 5th July 2013.

The story is about a man known only as 'K' (John Abraham), who is in his 30s and is a heavy chain-smoker. He is very confident in himself and very arrogant in nature. K is also revealed to have smoked spiked ganja (marijuana) and landed up in hospital due to it. His well-wishers have tried to make him quit but to no avail. Both his friends, Abbas Tyrewala (Ranvir Shorey) and the doctor who treats K's brother (played by Karan Makhija), offer to set up an appointment at a rehabilitation center called 'Prayogshaala' ('The Laboratory'), which they claim will rid K of his dreadful habit. K finally relents after his wife Anjali (Ayesha Takia) leaves him, unable to take the strain K's smoking places on their relationship.

Lootera is inspired by O. Henry's The Last Leaf. In the picturesque town of Manikpur, West Bengal in 1953, a landlord goes to watch a Chhau dance with his daughter, Pakhi Roy Chaudhary (Sonakshi Sinha), an aspiring writer. After Pakhi has an asthma attack from the ensuing excitement, she is rushed home and given medication. As she recuperates, her father comforts her and narrates the story of the invincible king whose soul resided inside a parrot, telling her that she is the parrot within whom his life resides.

Paro Dev (Abhay Deol), the son of a rich businessman, is an insecure narcissist. He and Paro (Mahi Gill) are childhood sweethearts. Instead of acknowledging her affection and care, Dev nudges Paro over frivolous things. He is sent to London for higher studies when his father senses how spoilt his son is. While separated by distance, Paro and Dev's youthful love only blossoms more. After finishing his studies, Dev returns to Chandigarh and meets Paro. Their endeavor to make love makes for some dark comic moments. When Dev hears rumours about Paro, he immediately believes them and ditches her. The seeds of suspicion are sown here, which the couple are never able to weed out. What makes them fall apart is mutual suspicion and an essentially male vision of how a woman should conduct herself sexually. Paro turns her back on him when she hears him insult her and agrees to marry a man of her parents' choice. On her wedding day, Dev learns that the rumors were false but his ego doesn't let him accept his mistake, and he lets Paro marry someone else.
