Add to a movie listDe Witte is a Belgian film of 1934 in black and white, directed by Jan Vanderheyden. It is an adaptation of the hononymous book by Ernest Claes.
De Witte was the first Flemish film production with sound and at the same time it was also very successful. Weeks after the première in Antwerp's Cinema Colosseum the public kept coming to the picture.
The story describes the boyishnesses of Louis Verheyden, a white-haired rascal (usually nicknamed "de witte", meaning "the white one") in Zichem, a village at the countryside; in the film everything happens from the child's perspective. Edith Kiel added a love story to the original storyline made by Ernest Claes, something the original author did not like. Another adaptation with which the Church instead had difficulties was the minimalized role of the village priest. The main role was interpreted by Jef Bruyninckx.
In 1980 a new version came out, directed by Robbe De Hert and with the Dutch title De Witte van Sichem. The English name of the movie is Whitey.

The movie is set in and around Sichem in 1901. Louis Verheyden, 11 years old, lives with his parents and two brothers on a farm. His mother is a complaining woman. Father works at the farm of landowner Coene. He is mostly only home during dinner. He is a rather aggressive man and beats Louis frequently. Two mentally ill women who are clearly suffering from not otherwise specified delusional disorders, a mother and a (grown) daughter, live together in a secluded mansion. Un petit garçon termine de dessiner un cerf-volant à l'étage d'une maison remplie de canettes de bière vides. Il empile ensuite des canettes pour en faire une pyramide, mais le tas finit par s'écrouler et par rouler dans l'escalier. Au rez-de-chaussée, une femme ivre regarde une série sentimentale à la télévision. C'est la mère du petit garçon, qu'elle appelle « Courgette ». Au bruit, elle se met en colère et commence à monter l'escalier menant à l'étage, en annonçant au garçon qu'elle va le battre. Effrayé, le garçon referme brusquement la trappe sur la tête de sa mère qui tombe dans l'escalier et ne bouge plus. Au commissariat, un policier, Raymond, prend la déposition du petit garçon qui s'appelle Icare, mais préfère être appelé Courgette. Il n'a plus de père, mais il l'a dessiné sur son cerf-volant qui ne le quitte jamais. Raymond explique à Courgette que sa mère « est partie » et qu'il va l'emmener dans un endroit où vivent des enfants comme lui, qui n'ont plus ni père ni mère : un orphelinat.

The film is set Ireland in the early 1960s in the small town of Clones. Francie Brady (Eamonn Owens) is a 12-year-old boy whose imagination is fuelled by television - aliens, communists, the Atomic Age. Here, he is molested by a priest (Milo O'Shea), and finds solace only in his fantasies about a foul-mouthed Virgin Mary (Sinéad O'Connor). He returns home to find Joe has outgrown him and befriended Phillip Nugent. Before long, his father has drunk himself to death. Faced with being left completely alone in the world, Francie loses his grip on reality and lashes out with uncontrollable brutality, which shocks his provincial hometown.
