Lovers and Other Strangers revolves around the wedding of Mike (Michael Brandon) and Susan (Bonnie Bedelia), intercutting their story with those of other couples among their families and friends. As the movie opens, Mike wants to call off the wedding, arguing that it would be hypocritical for them to get married when they've already been living together for a year and a half. He only relents when Susan's father Hal (Gig Young) tells him that Susan went to her first Halloween party dressed as a bride.

The film is faithful to the plot of the novel. McGee and his close friend Meyer are fishing underneath a bridge when a young woman (a former prostitute named Vangie) is thrown off the bridge, weighted with a cement block around her ankles. McGee dives in and saves her, and is surprised when she insists that he not contact the police. She admits that she was nearly killed due to her involvement in a prostitution ring and a murder scheme. The trio travels to Nassau to investigate her would-be murderers, who work in male/female pairs to lure rich, lonely men traveling on cruise ships into their confidence, rob them, and then toss them overboard to drown. McGee and Meyer set out to dismantle the operation.

Tina Balser, an educated, frustrated housewife and mother, is in a loveless marriage with Jonathan, an insufferable, controlling, emotionally abusive, social-climbing lawyer in New York City. He treats her like a servant, undermines her with insults, and belittles her appearance, abilities and the raising of their two girls, who treat their mother with the same rudeness as their father. Searching for relief, she begins a sexually fulfilling affair with a cruel and coarse writer, George Prager, who treats her with similar brusqueness and contempt, which only drives her deeper into despair. She then tries group therapy, but this also proves fruitless when she finds her male psychiatrist, Dr. Linstrom, as well as the other participants, equally shallow and abusive.

In late 9th-century imperial China, the Tang dynasty court no longer had effective control of its empire, and the national capital Chang'an was sacked by Huang Chao's anti-government army. Li Keyong, a Shatuo chieftain loyal to the Tang cause, led his troops to suppress the rebellion. His 13 generals—essentially all adopted sons—helped expel Huang from Chang'an, although a rift between some of them became more and more apparent in the process. Following the victory, Li Keyong accepted an invitation for a banquet at military governor Zhu Wen's territory of Bianliang, unaware that it was a trap to assassinate him.
