Delbert, Bill, Lyman et Roscoe Ward vivent depuis toujours dans la même ferme de quarante hectares, au milieu de l'état de New-York. Ils ont entre cinquante-neuf ans et soixante et onze ans. Célibataires naïfs et presque illettrés, ils occupent deux pièces dans une cabane délabrée, sans eau courante, ni téléphone. Depuis leur enfance, Delbert et Bill partagent le même lit. La nuit du 6 juin 1990, Bill est retrouvé mort dans son lit. Le matin, Delbert est arrêté ; il a avoué le meurtre de Bill par étouffement. Pendant dix mois, il clame son innocence malgré ses premiers aveux. Les 499 habitants de Munnsville pensent que Delbert a signé un document qu'il ne savait pas lire. Ils organisent sa défense et récoltent 10 000 dollars pour le faire libérer sous caution. Le procès s'ouvre le 18 Mars 1991.

This film opens with a home video of the slaughter with a captive bolt pistol of a pig on a European farm. The video rewinds to play the slaughter in slow motion, which emphasizes the hand-held barrel against the pig's fore-skull and the cartridge explosion. A party centered on a game called Pilot and Passengers is broken up by Georg and Anna, when they return home while the party is in progress. The host of the party, Eva, is their daughter who lives in another part of town and who has, it turns out in questioning of Benny after the incident, taken advantage of the planned absence of Georg and Anna to host the impromptu party in their home. While watching a newscast, Georg and Anna discuss the money Eva won in the pyramid scheme she was promoting at the party. In a locker room at school, Benny encourages his friends to take positions in his own Pilot and Passengers game.

Fleeing abusive families, a group of teenage runaways form a protective family on their own, with King as their leader. The film is centered on the America's Cup series of yachting races and uses them as a backdrop for both an action/adventure and a romantic storyline. It is inspired by real events, starting from the loss of the 1983 America's Cup through the events of the 1987 America's Cup. Several of the 12-metre class yachts that participated in the Cup races were repainted and used in the movie. The boat and team representing the US to win used the name Geronimo in their comeback and take back the cup from Australia. Added authenticity was provided by New Zealand's long time America's Cup commentator Peter Montgomery.
