Darlene, une femme courageuse et intuitive, revient dans son village natal, à Russas, situé dans une région reculée du Nordeste au Brésil, avec un bébé venu d'on ne sait où. Lorsque ce dernier recueille son cousin, Zezinho, Darlene succombe au charme de ce nouveau venu et tombe enceinte. Elle accumule alors les maris sous le toit familial avec l'arrivée du jeune et beau Ciro. Chacun finit par s'accommoder de l'embarrassante mais pittoresque situation : les époux successifs apprennent à faire le deuil de leur machisme.

The story follows Jerry Welbach (Brad Pitt) as he travels through Mexico to find a valuable antique gun, The Mexican, and smuggle it into the United States. Five years earlier, Welbach had caused a traffic accident in which he hit the car of local mobster Arnold Margolese (Gene Hackman), who was jailed for five years after the police searched his car following the crash, finding someone tied up in his trunk. In compensation for the jail time, Welbach has been sent on various errands by Margolese's second-in-command, Bernie Nayman (Bob Balaban). Retrieving the gun will be his final errand. Welbach has a girlfriend, Samantha (Julia Roberts), whom he argues with constantly and who leaves Jerry prior to the trip over his lack of commitment to their relationship.

Agent 11 is a crime-fighting bullmastiff used by the FBI; he partners with his master Murdoch in Seattle. As they go after the Mafia boss, Sonny Talia, the dog attacks him and rips off one of his testicles. Talia is taken to the hospital to have it surgically replaced. As payback, he sends his two bodyguards, Gino and Arliss, out to kill Agent 11. For protection, the dog is sent to a training facility in Alaska.

When psychic private detective Tracy Wellman is retained by presidential candidate Senator William Armitage help to find his missing daughter, Rayanna, she encounters the telepathic cult leader David Mendez, who helps her learn they were both products of Cold War experiments. The film begins with Emil Slovak (Karel Roden) and Oleg Razgul (Oleg Taktarov) arriving in America. They were former criminals and after getting out of prison have come to the U.S. to claim their part of a bank heist in Russia (or somewhere in Czech Republic). Within minutes of arriving, Oleg steals a video camera. They go to the run down apartment of their old partner and demand their share. He doesn't have it so Emil stabs him and his wife to death, as Oleg tapes it with the camera. The couple's friend, Czech immigrant Daphne Handlova (Vera Farmiga), covertly witnesses the murders from the bathroom, but she escapes before they can get her too. To hide the crime, Emil burns down the apartment.
