The film opens up with a voiceover of a woman named Saiva telling the listener that a shaman said she was cursed at birth and would bring harm to anyone she cared for. While she and a young woman named Anja are camping in a subarctic region of Siberia, in desperation, she takes one of her sled dogs and slits after calming it, slits it throat, foreshadowing the shaman's prophecy about her birth. She and Anja then set out to relocate their camp. On the way, they almost get caught by Soviet/Russian soldiers. Fearing the worst, Saiva ventures out with Anja into the far north to the arctic tundra, passing abandoned telephone wire trees and to the area where she believes no one would ever find them. After a long paddle north, they pitch camp on a beach, where they set up their yurt.

Quand le seigneur demande à Lafcadia de soumettre les villageois de Tarang à ses ordres, ces derniers préfèrent lui échapper. Après le raid que Lafcadia organise, ses guerriers violent et pillent les villageois ; mais quand Lafcadia aperçoit l'amulette de son fils sur une jeune fille, il lui sauve la vie. Il regrettera alors très profondément d'avoir ravagé le village, et renoncera à son statut pour chercher la paix dans le village de Kullu, dans l'Himalaya. Quand le Seigneur l'apprend, il demande aux guerriers de le pourchasser et de le tuer. Cependant, ils n'y parviennent pas. Aussi, pour satisfaire leur Seigneur, ils tuent un sosie de Lafcadia et amènent sa tête devant le Seigneur. Ils capturent également Katiba, à qui il est demandé d'identifier son père. Devant le Seigneur, il affirmera qu'il s'agit bien de la tête de son père. Alors, il est également tué. Dévasté et sans arme, Lafcadia est seul quand un voleur, Riaz, décide de le suivre. Incapable de le faire fuir, Lafcadia l'ignore. Au cours de leur périple, Riaz en viendra à lui demander si c'est lui qui a tué son père.

Joanna Mills (Sarah Michelle Gellar), a travelling rep for a trucking company, is dedicated to her successful career but something of a loner. Since the age of 11 she has been a troubled person, with episodes of self-mutilation and menacing visions. Normally she avoids returning to her native Texas, but agrees to a trip there to secure an important client. During the trip her visions, which take the form of memories of events not from her life, increase in intensity. She sees a strange face staring back at her in the mirror. Her truck radio plays Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams" no matter what station she selects. She stops at the scene of an accident that, on the following day, seems not to have happened. Joanna cuts herself in a bar restroom and is narrowly rescued by a friend. She visits her father, who observes that from age 11 she was "a different girl". The visions continue, becoming both more specific and more threatening, centering upon a menacing man she does not recognize and a bar she has never seen, but a picture of which is in one of her catalogs.

Since getting divorced, Baroness Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin, previously Baroness Dudevant, the successful and notorious writer of sensational romance novels now living under the pseudonym George Sand, in Paris, has been in the habit of dressing like a man. In her romantic pursuit of the sensitive Chopin, whose music she fell in love with before seeing him in person, George/Aurora is advised that she must act like a man pursuing a woman, though she is also advised to avoid damaging his health by not pursuing him at all. With this advice Sand is deterred by a fellow countrywoman who pretends to be smitten with Chopin, the mistress of Franz Liszt, the Countess Marie d'Agoult. Whether the Countess is really in love with Chopin is unlikely; she seeks only to prevent a relationship between Chopin and Sand.
