A young pizza delivery boy named Keno inadvertently encounters burglars on his route and tries to stop them. Seeing him as a witness, the burglars attack Keno, who proves to be an expert martial artist, but he is soon overwhelmed before the arrival of the Ninja Turtles. Sexually abused by her brothers, Kate Barker runs away to become involved in bootlegging. She marries decent George Barker and gives birth to four sons, Herman, Arthur ("Doc"), Lloyd and Freddie. However, when George's law-abiding ways fail to provide for the family, "Ma" encourages her sons to commit crimes. Soon they become notorious criminals. FBI leader, J Edgar Hoover puts agent Melvin Purvis on the case. Meanwhile Alvin Karpis joins the gang. An attempted robbery leaves one Barker son, Herman, dead, and another Freddie, captured. Arthur Dunlop, a corrupt prison guard, helps Freddie escape and becomes Ma's lover. Dunlop plans a kidnapping that will net them $100,000, but it nearly goes wrong because of his incompetence. The gang kill him. They also kill another incompetent associate, a mob-doctor who messes up an attempt at plastic surgery. By this time Purvis is onto them. Lloyd and Arthur are arrested in Chicago, and Ma and Freddie are killed in a shootout in Florida.

Percival (3000) and Rooster (Boi) have been good friends since childhood. However, as they grow up, they each begin to live separate lives. Nino Brown and his gang, the Cash Money Brothers, become the dominant drug ring in New York City once crack cocaine is introduced to the streets during the late 1980s. Pour Spencer et Warren, deux fils de bonne famille, leur avenir semble déjà être tracé. Ils finiront, comme la plupart des étudiants fortunés comme eux, à Lexington, au Kentucky. Pour tromper leur ennui existentiel et mettre du piment à leur vie ennuyeuse, ils décident d'organiser un cambriolage audacieux : celui de la bibliothèque de l’Université Transylvania où Spencer étudie. Ils désirent voler des livres rares dont les trois gros volumes du classique de John James Aububon, "Birds of America" qui vaut à lui seul près de 12 millions de dollars, pour ensuite les revendre sur le marché noir. Rejoints par le sportif Chas et le mathématicien Eric, la bande se demande si leur recherche de sensations fortes va vraiment donner un sens à leur existence. Lorsqu'ils ont enfin un semblant de réponse, le point de non-retour est franchi et ils ne peuvent plus faire marche arrière.
