Sethu (Kamal Haasan) and Ranjani (Rekha) arrive at a cliff where they plan to commit suicide due to the pressure put up by Ranjani's parents against their marriage. Sethu who is the son of an ordinary drunkard cook (Delhi Ganesh) and is also a dancer is not accepted as groom for Ranjani by her parents. The parents threaten Ranjani that either they would kill Sethu or commit suicide. While jumping from the cliff Sethu accidentally gets trapped in a tree and escapes but Ranjani dies. Despite the attempts made by Ranjani's father to jail Sethu by framing a fault case that Sethu killed Ranjani, no strong evidence was there to prove it. He is jailed for the offence of attempted suicide for one year.

The basic story of the movie involves Laila and Suriya falling in love. A 3rd character gets entangled in the plot and Laila is compelled by her family to marry him. Heart-broken Suriya leaves her alone, but only to find out that the man she is engaged to marry is a total crook. In trying to prove this to Laila, Suriya always ends up in situations where he looks like the crook. Infuriated and disgusted Laila yells at Suriya telling him to back off. Suriya then officially leaves her alone. Sneha gets weaved into the plot and ends up falling for Suriya's charm, and fastidious behaviour and they end up having great times together, that is until Laila comes back all heart-broken after finding out her boyfriend wants nothing further to do with her as he was going to marry someone else. Upon seeing this Suriya becomes greatly disturbed and helps Laila out in all the ways he can. In the end Laila is moving back to her hometown and at the train station asks for Suriya's hand in marriage, only to find that he is not interested. He states that love isn't like a tape-recorder to play over and over again, it only comes once. He tells her he is now only interested in Sneha who will wait for him all her life. He sees her off and is leaving the train station when Sneha runs up to him. They both smile at each other and walk off into the sun set.

Thenmozhi (Sarita), a worker in a textile factory, resides in a small village with her blind father, a former freedom fighter. The movie revolves around Thomman (Rajan P. Dev), who is a thief, and his two adopted sons, Shivan (Mammotty) and Sathyan (Lal). Thomman eats the food and is hospitalized. After returning from hospital Thomman and sons come to Panickers house to know the truth. Now there is also Thomman and his sons with Panicker to help them and they defeat Thevar gang and take Thevar's Aid Rajakkannu or Rajappan (Salim Kumar) as their Adima means Slave. Later Thevar's daughter Poonkavanam (Laya) falls in love with Shivan. Thevar arranges Shivan's marriage with his daughter. There Kaaliyappan (Anand), who Poonkavanam's maternal uncle comes to stop the marriage. His plan success. At the marriage night Sathyan becomes a thief who robs the groom's Ornaments. Then Shivan and Sathyan Separates due to this incident. Actually Kaliyappan was its master brain. He tries to kill Sathyan and tell everyone that he escaped with the money. He killed Panicker's son by this way. But now Kaliyappan fails. Shivan come and help Sathyan. They go to Thevar’s house and reveals to him the truth about Panicker’s son and all misdeeds of Kaliyappan. After all becomes good there is a bad news for Shivan and Sathyan by Rajakkannu that Thomman due to his son’s separation attempt to suicide from a big mountain. His sons come there and Thomman tell that they would fight and Defeat him then only he stops his suicide attempt. At Last The Comical Climax Takes Place. Shivan and Sathyan beats Thomman and Thomman says -Ningalu thommanne makkalu thanne.
