Paul Michael (2 December 1958), better known by his stage name Lal, is an Indian film director, actor, script writer, producer, and film distributor widely known for his work in Malayalam cinema.

He is best known for teaming up with Siddique under the shared name Siddique-Lal to make films such as Ramji Rao Speaking (1989), In Harihar Nagar (1990), Godfather (1991), Vietnam Colony (1992), and Kabooliwala (1994). The duo broke off afterwards but he produced Siddique's Hitler (1996) and Friends (1999) under his production company Lal Creations. Other films he has produced include Thenkasipattanam (2000), Kalyanaraman (2002), Chathikkatha Chanthu (2004), Thommanum Makkalum (2005), and Chanthupottu (2005).

Lal's debut as an actor came in 1997 when he played Paniyan in Jayaraj's Kaliyattam. He is known for his serious as well as comedic roles and has twice won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his roles in Thalappavu (2008) and Ayal and Zachariayude Garbhinikal (2013). After sixteen years, Lal returned to directing with sequels to In Harihar Nagar, 2 Harihar Nagar (2009) and In Ghost House Inn (2010).

Biography

Lal was born on 2 December 1958, as Paul Michael to M. A. Paul and Philomina in a Roman Catholic Latin Rite family of the Archdiocese of Verapoly at Ernakulam. He is married to Nancy. The couple have a son Jean Paul Lal, who is an upcoming movie director and a daughter Monica.Music director Alex Paul, who composed soundtracks for the sequels of In Harihar Nagar, is his younger brother.

The film starts with a message "The aged aren't always wise, nor do the elderly always understand justice" Job 32:9. The story is narrated by the communist leader (TG Ravi) who witnessed it. The story is set in 1900 in Munnar in British occupied India. Harrison is a British businessman who comes to Munnar to cultivate tea. Harrison finds an able boy amidst his workers and names him 'Iyob'(Job). Harrison holds Iyob close and helps him get married to Annamma (Reenu Mathews). Harrison's wife leaves him, later he sees Kazhali (Lena) and becomes interested in her. When he finds out Kazhali's relation with Thacho, one of his servants. Iyob kills Thacho after Harrison order him to. Afterwards, Harrison takes Kazhali as his mistress and she becomes pregnant. In the time of the First World War, Harrison's business gets affected and he leaves for Britain but dies on the way. Knowing this Iyob throws Kazhali out of the house and takes over all assets of Harrison.

Rasheed (Lal) is an NRI working in the Gulf. He comes to his hometown Kozhikode on a vacation for his daughter's engagement. Rasheed has invested in a commercial property next to his house which he has let out to store owners, except for one room. During his holiday, he meets his friends here and they bond every night over a few peg of drinks. Set in late 1950s the film uses the symbols of Serpentine Worship and socio political rebellions during that period of time to create an ambience for storytelling. Sunny (Kunchacko Boban), a young priest, is put in charge of a church in a rural area. The church runs an old age home which is sponsored by Vavachan (Hareesh Peradi). There Sunny meets Sister Sophie (Miya George). The two working sincerely in the old age home and in the process discover the motives behind Vavachan's philanthropy. He has an agreement with the home that he gets the unclaimed dead bodies for the medical college run by his son (Krishna Kumar), which is always short of cadavers. Meanwhile Sunny meets Animol, the daughter of the church grave digger. She is a bright student who aspires to follow in the footsteps of Mother Theresa but due to financial troubles is unable to continue her education. Sunny offers to help her by getting an admission in a nursing college in Bangalore. Animol, while helping out to take care of an elderly woman from the old age home hospitalised in Vavachan's hospital witnesses her being smothered to death by Vavachan's son. Unable to hide her burden she confesses to Sophie and Sunny who advises her to reveal it to the police. But afraid for her life and her father Animol refuses and prepares to leave for Bangalore.
