It stars Sheela, Jayaram, Nayantara, Innocent, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, Siddique, Sukumari, Nedumudi Venu, and Mammukoya in the main roles. The film's score and soundtrack were composed by Ilayaraja.
The film marked a comeback for actress Sheela, and it was the debut film for Nayantara.
Synopsis
Kochu Thresia (Sheela), is a rich widow living a retired life in a quaint but beautiful village filled with eclectic characters. Living with her are her eldest son and family. Son and daughter-in-law are tired of Kochu Thresia's lovable eccentricities which they consider bad behavior for a woman her age. Her children consider her a nuisance who creates unnecessary trouble for them in their busy lives. Though old, Kochu Thresia is still young at heart and knows how to enjoy life getting into humorous predicaments which only incenses her grown-up kids. At this juncture, she meets the young, down-to-earth Reji (Jayaram) in whom she finds a sympathetic and understanding friend, and starts seeing him like a son. Reji eagerly fulfills all her wishes. From savouring the mouth-watering but forbidden beef to riding on the elephant, they enjoy all the moments spent together.Actors

Radha Devi (Santhi Krishna) is an office assistant working in the city of Kozhikode. She is in love with the unemployed Sivan (Jayaram). Radha Devi moves to Satyavathiyamma's (KPAC Lalitha) home as a paying guest along with two friends, Indu (Saranya) and Rama (Sari). The film is about Benny Chacko (Jayaram), a cable operator who dreams about earning wealth and getting rich. His friend (Nedumudi Venu) gives him the idea of getting married so he can use the dowry to fulfill his dreams. Benny marries Daisy (Kanika). To his dismay, he realizes that his father-in-law has not been able to arrange for the dowry, as agreed. This angers Benny but he decides to be patient and wait a few months before taking any further step. Meanwhile he informs Daisy that until the dowry is received, their relationship would remain unconsummated. Three months pass but Daisy's father is unable to give the entire dowry. Benny is angered, and he drops Daisy at her home. He tells her parents that she can return home after the dowry has been arranged for. Daisy and her family are greatly saddened by his behavior but they are unable to say or do anything. Benny's family is equally disappointed but they are helpless as well.

Sukumaran, his brother Mohanan and their mother live contently in a middle-class family. Mohanan has recently married Shylaja who is employed unlike Sukumaran’s wife Kanchana. Sukumaran is a supervisor to a company named JK Constructions. Shylaja’s fortunate life with money and job makes Kanchana envious about her and Kanchana slowly starts causing problems in the family by finding unnecessary issues which affects the smooth going of a peaceful family life. Finally Sukumaran leaves their family house and starts living in a rented house as part of Kanchana’s requests. Soon Kanchana finds one or the other reasons to live in luxury which is not conducive with the economical conditions of Sukumaran who is just a supervisor in a company. However he leans for her demands like buying costly home appliances, arranging a dance master for their daughter, sending her to English medium school, buying an old car (which would be destroyed soon) etc. The huge economical demands slowly crush Sukumaran and it finally affects him in the manner of creditors demanding their money back. In order to meet the worst situations Sukumaran finally decides to cheat his employer by forgery. The authorities soon come to know about the truth and one day, when Sukumaran is already under heavy economical pressures, the police arrive and arrest him. The next day, because of the ill reputation caused by the family the house owner arranges people to drive Sukumaran’s family out of their rented house. At this point Mohanan comes to their rescue knowing about the situations where his brother has been led by the ill advice of his wife Kanchana. Mohanan arranges things to release his brother from jail. Finally the family is united where Kanchana understands her mistakes.

Bhaskaran(Sreenivasan), the local village goldsmith is in love with Snehalatha(Urvashi), the daughter of P.V.Panicker(Innocent), the local astrologer. They are neighbors. Snehalatha asks for a gold necklace made of 10 pavans (sovereigns) as a symbol of Bhaskaran's love. Bhaskaran makes a necklace and hands it over to Snehalatha. An angry Panicker (her father) finds this out, admonishes her and pockets the golden necklace. He reasons that it was "brotherly love" which made Bhaskaran give the necklace to his daughter.

Vidyalakshmi (Mamta Mohandas), scion of a rich Hindu aristocratic family gets married to Shanavas (Asif Ali), a Muslim, against the diktats of both the families. Though, happily married, life is not a smooth ride for them. Few years passed by and the couple now has a daughter Laya, who is now in nursery. Despite strong financial troubles, Shanavas does his best to take care of his family. One rainy night, on his way to purchase mangoes for his daughter, Shanavas is killed by a group of goon, mistaking him to be someone else. Having nowhere to go, Vidyalakshmi is trying her best to take care of her daughter. But, the financial troubles forces her to cut down the daily expenses, including the school bus for her daughter. Within short time, she is asked to vacate the house, as there has been a long delay in payment of rent. Vidyalakshmi, with nowhere to go, decides to sleep on railway platform with her daughter. One fine morning, she catches an auto to drop her kid at school. Preman (Jayaram), the auto driver is a talkative and simple chap, with a sense of humor. But after travelling, she gets out of the auto and escapes without paying the cash. The next day, Preman finds her at railway station, and on demanding the auto fare, she explains her story to him, which makes him feel sympathetic to her. He brings Vidyalakshmi and her daughter to his colony. Vidyalakshmi, within short time captures the hearts of the people around. When Preman comes to know that she was doing her MBBS when got married and had to give up studies after that, he makes her to appear of final year exam. With the support of the colony residents, Vidyalakshmi appears of MBBS examination and becomes a doctor. Her daughter, one day comes in contact with the mother of Shanavas, who wants now her grand daughter to be brought to home. But Vidyalakshmi politely refuses it. The elder brother of Shanavas threatens her with the support of a Moulavi, but Preman intervenes and force them to go back. With the help of her friend, Vidhyalakkshmi gets a job in Kuwait and though not willing, she had to accept it. She leaves to Kuwait with her daughter, promising to come back soon. Preman is seen waiting at beach, looking for the next news from Vidyalakshmi.

The story revolves around Ajayan (Mohanlal), who, after having tried his luck in different cities around the world, comes back to his village to look after his ageing mother Ammukutty Amma (Sheela) and to get her love and the nostalgia of his growing up years. There, he starts a company for producing agricultural equipment and earns his living as a farmer. One day a boy comes and meets Ajayan claiming to be his son. Ajayan used to boast himself as a womanizer in his youth is believed to be the boy's father by all villagers. Ammukutty Amma starts getting to like the boy and they form a very friendly relation and eventually she starts accepting the boy as Ajayan's real son, though Ajayan ferociously reject the boy's claim and dislikes him. The boy is persuaded by Ammukkty Amma to get close with Ajayan and subsequent events softens Ajayans attitude towards the boy. Ajayan then set forth to enquire about the real identity of the boy and travels to Chennai. He is absolutely sure that he is not his father as the real truth is his stories about adventures with woman were actually lies to get admiration of his friends. The climax show us that Ajayan accepts the boy as his own son.
