Susan et Gary Wilson emménagent dans une petite ville de Louisiane avec leurs deux enfants : Emily et Orin. Carol Mills (Peggy Lipton) is a mother who has a troubling relationship with her 19-year-old daughter Annie (Danica McKellar). When a beautiful high student named Cindy (Fill) is sexually harassed by Dr. Gordon Powell (Gross), the principal at her high school, she seeks out guidance counselor Sarah Collins (Kramer). Upon discovering that his wife is having an affair, depressed insomniac Ed Okin (Jeff Goldblum) drives to LAX on his friend Herb's (Dan Aykroyd) suggestion.
