Synopsis
Police chief Joe Conroy (Hayden) is relieved of his police duties after he accuses a "respected community man" Al Willis (Barry) of murdering a group of police officers. Despite his lack of authority, Conroy puts so much heat on Willis that the latter, making the excuse to his wife Helen (Marcia Henderson) that he needs time to clear his head, skips town for Border City, where he's living a double life as a hoodlum with bar-singer mistress Marianna (Grahame), whom he treats abusively.Actors

Matt Kelly (Robert Ryan) is released from jail and skips town in his boat without paying outstanding storage fees. Back in his home town he is hired by his old friend Jim Kimmerly (Brian Keith), the head of the local salmon fishermen who have formed a canning co-operative. The fishermen are battling against an organised gang who are robbing the fishing traps. Matt however, short on cash, joins the raiders, whilst Jim, unaware of his duplicity, keeps covering for him amongst the other fishermen. Furthermore Kelly has his eyes upon Jim’s fiancée, Nicki (Jan Sterling). Kelly's recklessness eventually causes the loss of Kimmerly's fishing boat in a glacier avalanche. He tries to make amends for his misdemeanours in an act of self-sacrifice.

1852. Le capitaine Harper découvre, en arrivant au fort, que le commandant de celui-ci a été tué. Il quitte le fort avec quelques hommes, la jeune Laura Evans, fille du commandant, et Brett Halliday, accusé d’avoir déserté pour rejoindre les indiens Utes. Hallyday tente vainement de se justifier en déclarant à Harper, qui le déteste, que sa volonté était d’empêcher un bain de sang entre les indiens et les soldats. Il conseille à Harper de fuir en barque, ce que l’officier finit par accepter. Le trajet est périlleux, car les Utes sont toujours en train de guetter leurs adversaires. Halliday révèle à plusieurs reprises son courage et Laura comprend qu’il avait bien agi. Ford devient jaloux de Halliday et tente de le tuer mais c’est lui qui fait une chute mortelle.
