The film is set in the Székely woodcutting community of Transylvania. The film's plot was based on a series of short stories by József Nyírő. The film was exhibited at the 1942 Venice Film Festival, where it was widely praised. The film's style has been suggested as an influence on the emerging Italian neorealism. It was not granted an exhibition certificate in Nazi Germany because Joseph Goebbels considered it "too Catholic".
Synopsis
L'histoire simple de Gergő, bûcheron contraint de quitter, avec sa famille, les montagnes de Transylvanie pour aller travailler dans la vallée... Misère, maladie. Un contremaître de l'exploitation forestière dans laquelle ils sont employés, tente de violer son épouse. Celle-ci meurt accidentellement en essayant de lui échapper. Gergő se venge en tuant le contremaître : il est emprisonné. Puis, il s'évade. Les gendarmes le blessent. Il meurt dans la cabane d'un berger, en s'arrangeant pour que la prime promise à celui qui l'arrêtera soit versée à un vieil ami qui élèvera son garçon...Actors

Following the quelling of Lajos Kossuth's 1848 revolution against Habsburg rule in Hungary, prison camps were set up for people suspected of being Kossuth's supporters. Around 20 years later, some members of highwayman Sándor Rózsa's guerrilla band, believed to be some of Kossuth's last supporters, are known to be interned among the prisoners in a camp. The prison staff try to identify the rebels and find out if Sándor is among them using various means of mental and physical torture and trickery. When one of the guerrillas, János Gajdar, is identified as a murderer by an old woman, he starts aiding his captors by acting as an informant. Gajdar is told that if he can show his captors a man who has killed more people than himself, he will be spared. Fearing for his life, he turns in several people his captors had been looking for by name, but could not identify among the prisoners.

Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) is the aging player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs hockey team in the fictional Federal League. A perennial loser for years, the team's manager Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) has resorted to extreme cost-cutting techniques and embarrassing promotional antics to keep local interest alive. Dunlop, while not particularly talented as either a player or coach, is a skilled con man, and regularly manipulates the team to his own advantage. During a hopeless season, the Chiefs pick up the Hanson Brothers, bespectacled violent goons with childlike mentalities, complete with toys in their luggage. Horrified at being given players who seem stupid, immature, and unreliable, Dunlop initially chooses not to play them.
