A Hungarian soldier returning from fighting in the Second World War marries the woman he believes to be the widow of a former comrade who he thinks died in the Prisoner of War camp in which they were held.
Song of the Cornfields was one of only three Hungarian films to be made in 1947, as the film industry struggled to recover from the destruction of the final war years. The film was based on a novel by Ferenc Móra. It was the second film directed by Szőts, following up his well-received 1942 debut People of the Mountains which featured several of the same cast members. The film was banned in Hungary because of its depiction of the controversial issue of Hungarian prisoners held by the Soviets. The Hungarian Communist leader Mátyás Rákosi walked out of a screening in protest, and the film was not shown again in Hungary until 1979. Szőts' next scheduled film Treasured Earth was taken away from him and given to Frigyes Bán to direct.

'Saudamini' (Shabana Azmi) is a bright village girl with academic ambitions and an appetite for literature and philosophy. Her intellectual uncle (Utpal Dutt) indulges her brainy bent, encouraging her studies and running interference between Mini and her mother (Sudha Shivpuri), a pious widow whose only concern is to see Mini married, and quickly. Mini has a nascent love affair with her neighbor Narendra (Vikram), the zamindar's son, a student in Calcutta who on his frequent visits brings her Victorian literature, listens raptly to her discourse, and is bold enough to kiss her opportunistically when they are caught together in a rainstorm. Plunged into despair, Mini struggles to become accustomed to life in her unwanted marriage and her new home, where Ganshyam's stepmother seems to favor Mini's sisters-in-law and where her new husband treats her with a patience that she finds perplexing.

Renouncing her sinful past Emanuelle (Laura Gemser) moves into a convent and becomes a nun, dedicating her life to religion and rejecting sin. Monika (Mónica Zanchi) a free-spirited daughter of a rich Baron joins the convent. She tells one sister how she was sexually assaulted by a group of young men (from a flashback sequence we learn that she actually consented and encourages them to make advances at her by revealing her breasts); this gains her sympathy from her fellow sisters. He has sex with Monika; witnessed by most nuns in the convent. Monika is later dismissed. Emanuelle later leaves at her own free-will.
