Pratima is a 1945 Hindi movie directed by Paidi Jairaj. The film was produced by Bombay Talkies and was the directorial debut of P. Jairaj. The film stars Dilip Kumar, Swarnalata, Mumtaz Ali, Shah Nawaz and Mukri. Swarnalata was cast following her big success the preceding year, Rattan (1944). Mukri was cast in his debut role by Devika Rani who is stated to have "liked his style and off-screen enthusiasm". The music direction was by Arun Kumar Mukherjee and the lyricist was Narendra Sharma.

Ashok (Dilip Kumar) is an impoverished writer waiting for his book to be published. He meets Bindiya (Nalini Jaywant), a flower-seller, who insists he buy some flowers from her. Ashok gives his last two annas (12 pence) to her. A rogue tries to get the money from Bindiya and when Ashok tries to help her, he is knocked down and loses his eyesight. Bindiya takes Ashok to the local doctor whose daughter Geeta (Nargis) falls in love with him. Since he has no place to stay, the doctor gives Ashok accommodation in his house till he improves. Bindiya has also fallen in love with Ashok, and when Ashok is implicated in a probable murder she visits him in jail. Geeta's father dies and her two aunts come to stay with her and try to get her married. Meanwhile, Bindiya finds a suicide note from the apparent murdered victim and Ashok is set free. Geeta's aunts see Bindiya with Ashok and come to the opinion that she's his wife. They get Geeta to agree to get engaged to Ashok's publisher. After some more melodramatic turns in the story, Bindiya dies and Ashok and Geeta are united. Ashok's book becomes hugely popular.

Dilip Kumar plays the role of a man set up and framed for a murder for which he is jailed, because of his scheming son-in-law, Raghuvaran. His Daughter Swapna is also killed at the hands of Raghuvaran, when Raghuvaran slaps and tries to molest Madhuri Dixit, when she confronts him about his evil deeds. Dilip Kumar avenges the death of his daughter and the years spent in prison. Against this backdrop, Govinda is a man who works for the underworld after he is shot as a child by Tej Sapru. After finding love with Madhuri Dixit, Govinda changes his ways and joins up with Dilip Kumar to take revenge as he too has been wronged by the same group of villans.

For any young married couple, moving into their new house is a very special feeling. The feeling gets more special if the young couple has eloped and married. Something similar happened with Shakuntala (Suchitra Sen) and her husband. The landlord (David) helps the couple move to the rented house. The young couple moves to this house which incidentally is the main protagonist of the film. While Shakuntala makes the house into a beautiful home, her husband gets busy with work. She meets the neighboring tea vendor (Mohan Choti) and meets the next door auntie whose favourite pastime is to gossip about developments in others' homes. The couple experiences the sound of violin in the night and ask the tea-stall-owner about it in the morning, who tells that it is being played by a mad man-Pagla Babu.Since, the couple had eloped Shakuntala wanted that her parents-in-law accept her as their daughter-in-law. This is what happens and her in laws somehow search the young couple and they are more than happy to meet Shakuntala. Finally, Shakuntala and her husband go with them and vacate the house. In between Shakuntala grows some seeds in the garden.

After the passing of Maharaj Dhiraj Rana Chandrabhan of Kailash Nagar, the Senapati, Veer Singh, crowns Rajkumar Dhivendra Pratap Bahadur Chandrabhan as the next King. Veer's wife, who has brought up Dhivendra like her own son, Surinder, would like Dhivendra to get married to Rajkumari Chandramukhi of Rajgarh. The Maharaja of Rajgarh is pleased to hear of this, and asks his daughter to set forth to Kailash Nagar. On the way there, she is abducted by her very own Senapati and held captive until she gives her consent to marry him. Dhivendra rescues her, both fall in love, but are captured by Senapati's men. Dhivendra is gravelly injured but manages to escape and is looked after Rajgarh's Raj Nartaki, Rajlaxmi, who also falls in love with him. After Dhivendra recuperates, he finds out that Chandramukhi is being against her will at Senapati's castle, he sets forth to set her free, but is captured in the process. Held in chains, he is blinded by a vengeful Rajlaxmi, and Chandramukhi is given an ultimatum - either wed Senapati or witness the death of Dhivendra.
