Vaanchinathan (2001) is a Tamil action film directed by Shaji Kailas in his Tamil debut. The script was written by Liyakath Ali Khan. It stars Vijayakanth, Sakshi Shivanand Ramya Krishnan and Prakash Raj in pivotal roles. The film received mixed reviews.The character of Prakash raj is heavily inspired from the bond villain Elliot carver played by Jonathan Pryce in Tomorrow never dies.

Synopsis

Vanchinathan(Vijayakanth) is naturally the supercop who has been transferred from Gujarat. He is someone who is not averse to using the law in his own ways by killing someone and picking a suitable alibi, as long as the person is evil and will not be punished by the law. Chidambaram(Prakashraj) is a newspaper magnate who thrives on chaos and confusion which will help him boost sales of his paper. Their enmity becomes personal when Chidambaram challenges Vanchinathan to arrest him when he cleverly commits a murder in broad daylight in front of Vanchi's own eyes.

A container packed with fake currency is stopped at the check post by Thomas Kurien, an honest senior customs officer along with Rajath Naidu, the city commissioner of police. But he is shocked to find out that Rajat Naidu himself is a part of the gang, who shoots down Kurien to save himself. A few months later, Gyanashekhara Varma (Murali), IG of vigilance makes a controversial press conference, in which he alleges the role of hawala transactions in the sudden rise in the crimes in the state. His statements were directly pointed at seniors in the state cabinet and police department. Varma is summoned by the chief minister in the presence of John Vargeese (Siddique), Rajya Sabha MP, and is warned of serious actions, unless he gives a proper explanation in the next couple of days. Instead of falling in lines of CM, Varma threatens him of further revelations in coming days. The next morning Varma is found dead in his bedroom. John Vargeese, an MP with strong foreign relations is also involved in several hawala dealings taking place in the state including terror activities. Senior police office Chandrashekhar IPS (Suresh Gopi)is appointed to solve the mystery of Varma's death. Chandrasekhar is assisted by Joseph Pothen (Saikumar) and Sudev Sachidanand. In the mean time, Suhara Ahmed (Gopika), a young journalist along with her friend Kishore is found missing. She is believed to have certain sensational information regarding minister Vakkachan (Rajan P. Dev). Chandrasekhar meets Vivekam Ahmed Sahib (Janardhanan), her father, who leads him to the personal computer of Suhara, which sheds light to certain truths. One day, Suhara is found in midst of a forest, critically wounded. Chandrasekhar gets her hospitalized, but her life is targeted many times. Chandrasekhar finds out shocking information regarding the anti-national activities of Vakachan along with John Vargeese from the video tapes of Suhara. Vakkachan is forced to resign from the cabinet and is arrested by Chandrasekhar, who then follows John Vargeese. He follows Vargeese to the sea port, from where he is planning to escape to Turkey. But, just minutes before he leaves coast, Vargeese is stopped by Chandrasekhar, who also finds out that his subordinate Sudev Sachidanand is none other than Musafir, an ISI agent who is also the murderer of Varma and Kishore, the friend of Suhara. Chandrasekhar shoots down both Musafir and John Vargeese.

The movie opens with Kozhikode city police commissioner Bharathchandran (Suresh Gopi ), an honest but brash cop, busting a gold smuggling racket in. Bharath clearly has an issue with authority and breaths fire each time he encounters a political arm bender, such as Kunju Moideen Saahib, whose gang was involved in the bust. But it his mentor and guardian angel I.G. Balachandran (M.G. Soman), who has been evidently shielding him from the wrath of the political brass.

Swami Amoorthananda (Narendra Prasad), a holy godman with strong international connections also runs a powerful narcotic drug mafia in the state. He also has several connections with in political circles. A good orator, Swami also draws a large number of devotees from abroad and many are slowly turned into addicts. A series of murders at Kovalam beach invites sharp criticism of the govt and the chief minister (Madhu) decides to bring a new head to the state narcotics wing. Madhavan IPS (Suresh Gopi), thus arrives in Kerala from New Delhi, and is assisted by Sharath Chandran (Siddique), a smart CI of Kerala police. Madhavan's aggressive way of investigation leads him to the ashram or Swami Amoorthananda, which creates a panic in the state. Swami decides to eliminate Madhavan and also plans to topple the CM by appointing his left arm, Velayudhan (Rajan P. Dev) as the new CM. Mahesh Nair (Devan) arrives in Kerala upon the order of Swami. He kills Sarath Chandran, which forces Madhavan to react violently. Madhavan raids the ashram and spoils Swami's plot to cause a series of bomb blasts in the state. In the climax, Madhavan kills Swami and Mahesh Nair, thus saving the state from a series of blasts and communal riots.

Unnikrishan (Vijayakumar), a simple, innocent, easy going chap joins Government Law College. He along with first year students are ragged by the seniors under the leadership of Pappan (Ashokan). A student leader with strong political clout, Pappan violently thrashes down Unnikrishnan who opposes the ragging. Later again, he is insulted in front of the girls. An anti-corruption drive led by Disha, a Gandhian social organization leads to the resignation of Krishnan Nambiar (Biju Pappan), a state minister. Susan Mary Thomas (Padmapriya Janakiraman), an upcoming English novelist is the main brain behind Disha, who also is involved in several woman empowerment programs. Just after his resignation, Krishnan Nambiar is found brutally murdered at a private tennis court. The chief Minister (Kollam Thulasi) assigns Appan Menon (Suresh Gopi), the investigation charge. Considered many to be a semi-eccentric for his way of behavior, Appan Menon is relieved from State Civil Supplies Corporation, where he was working as director. Appan Menon regularly calls up Vaiga (Vimala Raman), his wife at his residence in Madurai and gives a complete account of his day-to-day activities. Alexander Mekkadan (Siddique), who had begun the investigation of Krishan Nambiar's murder couldn't cope with the style of Appan Menon. Susan Mary Thomas is called up by Appan for preliminary questioning, but finds nothing suspicious. Up on calling Vaiga, in evening, she instructs Appan to be a bit more soft towards Susan and asks him to go and meet her to apologize. Appan reaches Susan's home, and is quite impressed by her activities, but disagrees with her non-violent movements. In mean time, Sulaiman Rauthar, a political leader is found dead. Apppan doubts both murders to be linked. Police team arrests Durga Dasan (Manoj K. Jayan), a former naxalite who claims himself to be a messenger of Goddess Durga. But up on questioning, it is revealed that he has got no links with murders. Susan, one day makes a visit to Appan's house and is shocked to find out that Vaiga is dead long back. She, with the help of Sahadevan (Chali Pala), Appan's personal assistant, gets his personal diary, through which tries to know more about him. Appan, son of a police superintendent in Tamil Nadu police, had a pale and colorless childhood. His father Vishwanatha Menon (Suresh Gopi), who was a strict follower of British army discipline tries to impose it on his son as well. Appan joins police after his education with gold medal. But just after the death of his father, he married Vaiga, whom he silently loved since his teenage days. Appan is appointed as the superintendent at Madhukarai. A ryot spreads through the village and 16 innocent villagers are brutally massacred. Appan finds out that Balasingam is brain behind the violence. His ambition to set up a Special Economic Zone was opposed by the villagers, who were feared of getting their land acquired. In retaliation, Balasingam wiped out the villagers to ease up the acquisition. Appan Menon arrests Balasingam and his accomplices. One evening, Kartha, Sulaiman Rauthar and Krishnan Nambiar and Kurian Vargeese (Mohan Jose) arrive at his home and demands a negotiation. Appan snubs them by refusing to accept any sort of negotiation. In a few minutes a group of thugs enter his residence and goes on rampage vaiga who was in bathroom is attacked by two thugs and murders her. Appan develops a psycho disturbance, in which he feels the presence of Vaiga with him. After reading his diary, Susan approaches Dr. Sreenivasan Iyengar (Lal),a psychiatrist for further details. Dr. Iyengar explains about Appan's visit to him just after the incident. He revealed to Dr. Iyengar that to get justice for Vaiga, he had killed Balasingam and is planning to killed the rest of the goons. Susan is shocked to find out that Appan himself is behind the murders of Krishnan Nambiar, Sulaiman and Kartha. Susan reaches out Alexander Mekkadan and passes out the information. Mekkadan launches a hunt for Appan, but he successfully flees from the nets. Appan reaches out at Kurian at his guest house. Kurian explains that Koshi Abraham Koshi (Saikumar), a high profile NRI businessman is the master brain behind everything. Appan kills Kurian and reaches out Koshi Abraham Koshi. He kills Koshi in the presence of the children of the 16 villagers of Madhukarai, whom Koshi had killed. The film ends by showing Appan witnessing a violent protest led by Susan Mary Thomas.

Devadevan (Suresh Gopi), an underworld don decides to appear in front of Justice Varma Commission, which is holding up a probe into the serial blasts that claimed hundreds of innocent lives. Devadevan's claim of divulging solid evidence of the hands of several top politicians and underworld in the blasts and communal riots that followed made many of his rivals sleepless. Just on reaching the court premise, he is shot on point blank. Severely wounded Devan is admitted in ICU, from where, his memories travels down to his early days in crime. Devadevan, a suspect under trail along with Mustafa (Biju Menon), his trusted right arm is bailed out by Khan Sahib (Rajan P. Dev), a smuggler on behalf of David Abraham (Kitty), a Dubai based underworld don. Up on release both Devan and Mustafa are provided safe accommodation at Khan's house, where he meets up Nancy (Ramya Krishnan), the daughter of Khan's second wife in her first marriage. An upcoming movie star, Nancy fells in love with Devan within short time. Devan and Mustafa commits several smuggling operations for Khan and slowly rises up in career. Up on realizing that Khan is double crossing him, David Abraham kills him and appoints Devadevan as his representative in India. Devan and Mustafa emerge as undisputed dons in the country. During that time, on a visit to Kerala, Devan meets up Harikrishnan (Ganesh Kumar), his childhood buddy undergoing a fast to protest against the new reservation policy of the government. Devan pledges to support Harikrishnan, a Namboothiri youth, who is in deep financial crisis. Hari is appointed as the second in command of Devan, who upon Devan's advice gives up his yajnopaveetham. James Kutty (Devan), a narcotic drug smuggler along with Reddiar (Sahadevan) tries all ways to finish up the empire of Devan, but all in vain. In retaliation Hari kills the son of Reddiar. Baba Rahim (N. F. Varghese), central home minister, Reddiar and James forms a league to finish off Devan. David Abraham, who was now losing turf to Devan too joins them and provides explosives and ammunition required to create a severe blast along with a communal riot that could deviate public attention from the series of corruption allegations against his men in power, including Baba Rahim. Mustafa in meantime fells in love with Saraswati (Devayani), the younger sister of Hari, who objects her sister's love towards a Muslim. Hari is shocked to find that Mustafa is supported by Devan and splits ways with him. Hari is allured by James and is used effectively to transport explosives into the city. The serial blasts breaks down Devan, who is shocked to find that his name is dragged into it effectively by David Abraham and gang. Mustafa is killed by James. Devan finishes off David Abraham and James. He was then to appear in front of Justice Varma Commission, when was shot point blank by Harikrishnan. At hospital, upon discharging from ICU, Devan is transferred to ward, where Justice Varma meets him up. But Varma plays double game, whereby removing the bullets from Devan's pistol successfully. Just minutes after the exit of Varma, Hari enters his ward and tries to shoot him up. But Devan successfully escapes. While following Devan, Hari gets into a car, but the cabbie was Koshy (Maniyan Pillai Raju), the attorney of Devan (Maniyan Pillai Raju), who locks the car from outside, in which a bomb was planted. Devan, using his remote control blows up the car killing Hari.
