Ce film est l'histoire d'un petit village de la Mauricie appelé Saint-Élie-de-Caxton le film se déroule dans la période de la crise économique du début des années 1930. Madame Gélinas, victime du manque de contraceptifs, a retenu l'accouchement de son fils pendant 15 ans car c'était le seul moyen d'arrêter les grossesses à cette époque. Finalement naît le jeune Ésimésac, qui a l'air beaucoup plus vieux que son âge et se trouve doté d'une force extraordinaire qui va finir par donner une grande aide au village. Ils ont tous l'idée de bâtir un jardin communautaire, à la construction duquel participent tous les villageois, ce qui ne manque pas d'attirer l'attention de la fille du Forgeron Riopel. Lorsque la compagnie de chemin de fer arrive et laisse croire aux villageois que le train pourrait s'arrêter chez eux, les villageois commencent déjà à s'imaginer riches. Le forgeron, Ésimésac et les ouvriers se mettent donc au travail pour produire des rails à bon prix pour le chemin de fer, mais Marie, la grande sœur d'Ésimésac, pense toujours au jardin communautaire.

The story begins in late 1960s Japan. A group of tanuki are threatened by a gigantic suburban development project called New Tama, in the Tama Hills on the outskirts of Tokyo. The development is cutting into their forest habitat and dividing their land. The story resumes in early 1990s Japan, during the early years of the Heisei era. With limited living space and food decreasing every year, the tanuki begin fighting among themselves for the diminishing resources, but at the urging of the matriarch Oroku ("Old Fireball"), they decide to unify to stop the development.

Jeanne and Jean are happy newlyweds in a rural village. Their idyll is promptly shattered when Jeanne, on her wedding night, is raped in a ritual deflowering by the local baron and his lackeys. She returns to Jean terrified and in pain, and he calms her, saying, "Let us forget everything in the past". She begins to see visions of a phallic-headed spirit encouraging her to take revenge on the baron; meanwhile, the couple's fortunes rise even as famine strikes the village and the baron raises taxes to fund his war effort. Jean is made tax collector, and the baron cuts off his hand as punishment when he cannot extract enough money from the village. After another visit from the spirit, Jeanne takes out a large loan from an usurer and sets herself up in the same trade, eventually parlaying it into becoming the true power in the village.

The plot of the adaptation largely follows the first two Discworld novels, The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic. The story follows the exploits of Rincewind, a wizard who is expelled from Unseen University after spending 40 years failing to learn even the most basic magic. In fact, Rincewind's head holds one of the eight spells from the Octavo, the most powerful spellbook in the Discworld, and he has been unable to learn others because "they were afraid to be in the same head" as the Octavo spell. Rincewind is forced to act as a local guide for Twoflower, a property insurance salesman and the Discworld's first tourist, who is visiting Ankh-Morpork, and Twoflower's luggage, which is made from sapient pearwood and can run on its own legs.

Every morning, Sun-woo receives a calla lily with a musical note attached to it, and he wants to find out who his secret admirer is. One day he meets the beautiful Ji-hee on the bus and connects her with the daily anonymous gift when he notices the same music from the musical note coming from the flower shop she works at. He falls in love with her at first sight, thinking she is the one who is sending him flowers. Wanting to confess his feelings for her, he asks her out on a date at a local hotel, and she agrees. At the hotel, though, he arrives to find Ji-hee taken hostage, and, to his horror, tragically murdered before his eyes.

Buster est un jeune comédien acrobate dans une troupe de théâtre professionnelle. Pendant une représentation, il est censé rentrer sur scène et apporter une lance au comédien principal, le célèbre maître Hung, mais celle-ci disparaît dans les loges presque sous ses yeux. Désespéré, il cherche l'arme partout et tombe nez à nez avec un mystérieux fantôme accompagné d'une lanterne rouge. Sans savoir comment, Buster se retrouve dans la rue, loin du théâtre où il travaille. Il arrive in extremis sur scène avec ladite lance pour la donner à maître Hung. Mais celui-ci change brutalement d'attitude et se met à chanter une chanson d'une voix de femme. Le public s'enfuit, la pièce est arrêtée et Buster finit par être renvoyé. La nuit suivante, le fantôme vient à nouveau hanter le jeune garçon.

In 1776, a young Polish patriot, Boleslas Vorowski, is wounded in an abortive uprising against the Russian forces in Vilnius. A reward for his capture is offered but he is sheltered by Baron von Kempelen, an inventor of lifelike automata, who plans to smuggle Vorowski, a skilful chess-player, to Germany concealed inside a chess-playing automaton called The Turk. Major Nicolaïeff, a Russian rival of Vorowski, challenges The Turk to a game and is defeated, but he realises that the machine is being secretly operated by Vorowski. He arranges for The Turk to be sent to Moscow to entertain the Empress Catherine II. When The Turk refuses to allow Catherine to cheat, the Empress orders that the automaton is to be executed by firing squad at dawn. During a masked ball, von Kempelen replaces Vorowski inside The Turk, to enable him to escape with his lover Sophie. Nicolaïeff, who has been sent to search von Kempelen's house, is slain by the inventor's sabre-wielding automata.

Honorin est régisseur du théâtre Cascaroni qui affiche le spectacle François Ier à son programme. Chargé de remplacer un comédien défaillant, mais mort de trac, il s'endort chez son ami Cagliostro (qui l'a hypnotisé pour lui enlever son trac), mage des foires, et se réveille quelques siècles en arrière, à la cour du roi de France François Ier, son Petit Larousse à la main. Ce merveilleux atout littéraire lui permet de prédire l'avenir au grand désarroi de certains intrigants de la cour. Les questions que le roi et ses courtisans lui posent sont parfois saugrenues: ainsi il doit donner les ingrédients entrant dans la recette de la Mortadelle, spécialité à laquelle les Français ont pris goût lors des Guerres d'Italie, et que les cuisiniers français sont incapables de préparer. Ce livre capable de prévoir le destin (il donne la date de la mort des personnages en vue de l'époque) lui vaut une accusation de sorcellerie montée par une cabale de courtisans jaloux. Supplicié (une chèvre vient lui lécher les pieds en déclenchant un inextinguible fou-rire qui menace de l'asphyxier), il va bientôt se réveiller dans son siècle pour constater que la vie était bien plus belle en 1520. Pour cela, il retourne voir son ami Cagliostro.

Dans l'île de Noirmoutier, un écrivain et son épouse s'installent dans un fort, où ils vivent en réduisant au minimum les contacts avec la population. La femme a perdu l'usage de la parole après un accident. Le mari est écrivain. À proximité vit un ingénieur retraité, misanthrope. Des faits troublants se produisent. Plusieurs habitants de l'île semblent perdre le contrôle d'eux-mêmes. Les réalités s'entremêlent : l'écrivain trouve un sujet pour un roman fantastique, tandis que l'ingénieur manipule les îliens à distance grâce à une machine de son invention. Les deux hommes se rencontrent pour une partie d'échecs capitale : le démiurge réel du monde imaginaire joue contre le démiurge probablement imaginaire du monde réel. L'enjeu et la fin de toute chose, c'est à la fois l'amour et la mort.
