In the Victorian period, two young cousins, Richard and Emmeline Lestrange, and a galley cook, Paddy Button (Leo McKern), survive a shipwreck in the South Pacific and reach a lush tropical island. Paddy cares for the small children and forbids them by "law" from going to the other side of the island, as he found evidence of remains of bloody human sacrifices. Deux demi-frères (Sylvain Green et Claus Obalski) doivent retrouver leur demi-sœur pour toucher l'héritage de leur père. Seul petit inconvénient, les deux frères ne se sont rencontrés que dans le bureau du notaire; et le seul indice dont ils disposent sur leur sœur est une photo. La sœur est en plus embrigadée dans une secte. Il s'ensuit alors une course-poursuite passant par la Normandie, l'Espagne (dans un village naturiste) et la Tunisie. En chemin, l'un des deux frères croisera sur son chemin sa petite amie hôtesse de l'air (Victoria Abril) qui se révèlera d'une aide précieuse. Leur sœur retrouvée, ils retournent chercher leur héritage, mais tout n'est pas si simple.

Friends of the first part can be found in the ski resort of Val d'Isere where Jerome, Gigi and Popeye work. Jerome and Gigi are now married : Gigi holds a pancake while Jerome exercised in his medical practice. Nathalie and Bernard, reconciled and fairly "new rich" are owners of a time share. Jean-Claude, always in search of a soul mate and still no seduction, desperately trying to dredge anything that moves. Christiane landed with a married man and much older than her, Marius. Popeye is now much less sure of himself: humiliated by his wife cheating on him with his cousin, he claims his friends that he is the manager of a ski shop when it was held by the same couple. During an exit off piste skiing, the group loses before being rescued by mountain peasants, which will make them taste artisan food and drink: first of pussy - a strong cheese soaked in fat , rinds, and wood alcohol for two or three seasons - and the shallot liquor found in garlic juice "because shallot alone, it s'rait too bland" in a parody of the famous scene Tontons gunslingers.

La vie quotidienne mouvementée d'une colonie de vacances établie dans un somptueux château et son parc. Raoul (Gérard Depardieu) and his wife Solange (Carole Laure) are eating in a restaurant when Raoul expresses concern with Solange's apparent depression, as she eats little, suffers migraines and insomnia and also sometimes faints. He finds another man in the room, Stéphane (Patrick Dewaere), to be her lover and hopefully enliven her again. Stéphane is puzzled by Raoul's plan but gives in to his desperate appeals for help. Small Change is a comedy with a serious message, based around the daily lives of young children in Thiers, France. Scenes include a baby and a cat perilously playing on an open windowsill, a girl causing confusion with a bullhorn, a double date at the movie theater, a kid telling a dirty joke, a botched haircut, as well as many scenes about school life. Yet throughout this the difficulties and responsibilities faced by children appear, including the ongoing story of a boy's experience of an abusive home. Truffaut gives a message of resilience in the face of injustice, vocalized through one of the teachers. The story ends with a message of hope, the school closing for the summer vacation, and one of the key characters finding his first love at a summer camp.
