Eldar Aleksandrovich Ryazanov (Russian: Эльда́р Алекса́ндрович Ряза́нов; b. 18 November 1927) is a Soviet/Russian film director whose comedies, satirizing the daily life of the country, are very famous throughout the former Soviet Union.
He was named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1984, and received the USSR State Prize in 1977. He won the Nika Award in the category Best Director in 1991. The asteroid 4258 Ryazanov is named after him.
Among his most famous films are Carnival Night (1955), Hussar Ballad (1962), Beware of the Car (1966), The Irony of Fate (1975), Office Romance (1977), The Garage (1979), and A Cruel Romance (1984). Ryazanov's main genre is tragicomedy.
Il fait ses études à l'Institut national de la cinématographie, dans la classe de maître de Grigori Kozintsev. Diplômé en 1950, il travaille pendant cinq ans au studio central du film documentaire de Moscou, où il réalise les épisodes des séries de communication télévisuelle Pionerya («Пионерия»), Novosti dnya («Новости дня»), Sovetski sport («Советский спорт»), ainsi que plusieurs courts-métrages documentaires. À partir de 1955, sa carrière se poursuit à Mosfilm dont le directeur artistique de l'époque Ivan Pyriev l'encourage à s'essayer à la comédie. Riazanov remporte un immense succès public et critique avec son premier film dans ce genre, La Nuit de Carnaval, qui arrive à la 1 place par le nombre de spectateurs en 1956 (48,64 millions) et propulse ses acteurs principaux, les jeunes Lioudmila Gourtchenko et Youri Belov, au rang de célébrités nationales. En 2007, sur la chaîne de télévision publique Rossiya K, il présente un nouveau projet Chez Eldar Riazanov («В гостях у Эльдара Рязанова»), une série de rencontres en direct avec les invités du monde de cinéma russe.
La santé du réalisateur devient précaire les dernières années. Il est hospitalisé à plusieurs reprises en 2014 et en 2015. Il meurt de l'insuffisance cardiaque le 30 novembre 2015. Il sera inhumé au cimetière de Novodevitchi.

Le réalisateur est le fils d'agent du Service des délégués commerciaux de l'URSS à Téhéran, Alexandre Riazanov, et son épouse Sophia Schustermann (1902-1969). La famille habite au n 120, rue Frounze à Samara. Peu après, ils s'installent à Moscou. Les parents divorcent au milieu des années 1930. Eldar est élevé par le second mari de sa mère, Léon Kopp (1899-1985), cadre à l'Institut de géologie de l'Académie des sciences d'URSS.Il fait ses études à l'Institut national de la cinématographie, dans la classe de maître de Grigori Kozintsev. The characters from the first film now have children, who have managed to get into the same situation as their parents many years ago. However, this story is not simply a remake of the original movie. Firstly, all of Lukashin's adventures were accidental, whereas here everything is done according to a plan thought up by Pavlik (a friend of Lukashin's). His idea is to help his friend Evgeniy with his loneliness. To this end, he dispatches Lukashin's son Kostya to Petersburg, where he acts in the same manner as his father 30 years ago. In flat 12 he meets Nadejda (who is actually the daughter of Nadejda from the first movie). She has a fiancé called Irakliy, a businessman. Kostantin's task is to lure Iracliy away from the flat, then wait for Nadejda's mother to come; he then makes her call Evgeniy Lukashin. Pavlik persuades Evgeniy to go to St. Petersburg. The plot becomes a story of two fights over a woman: Konstantin vs. Irakliy and Evgeniy vs. Ippolit. Finally Lukashins win the competition, because Irakliy turns out to be too dull for Nadya and Nadejda understands that she was never in love with Ippolit.

Near one of Moscow's train stations, on a landfill site, a group of vagrants lives. There are three main heroes in this movie: Vera, a waitress; Platon, a pianist; and... a train station where these two people met. The differences in the heroes’ characters and professions, the plight that Platon found himself in (he is to be arrested and undergo trial) trigger a host of both amusing and sad situations which serve as a backdrop for their unfolding love. Platon is innocent of the crime he is accused of. He simply took the blame for his wife’s driving over a pedestrian. But this is known only to Platon’s wife and Vera in whom he confided. However, after the verdict has been passed, Platon’s life is of no interest to his wife, although Vera is ready to wait for his release.

The action takes place in Moscow in 1976. Anatoly Yefremovich Novoseltsev, a clumsy single father of two sons, works at a statistical bureau. His boss is a strict unmarried woman, Ludmila Prokofievna Kalugina, nicknamed "our frump" by her subordinates. She has some self-confidence problems, hidden behind her gloomy humorless demeanor and plain old-fashioned look. Novoseltsev’s colleagues consider him as a smart and experienced worker. He dreams about a promotion and a raise that would help him provide for his children, but he is too timid to talk to his boss about it. His former classmate and old friend, Yuri Grigorievich Samokhvalov, recently appointed assistant manager of the institution, suggests appointing Novoseltsev as a head of the light industry department, but Kalugina rejects it believing that Novoseltsev is not good enough for the position. Then, following Samokhvalov's advice, Novoseltsev unwillingly tries to flirt with "the Frump" at a party in Samokhvalov's apartment in order to "get into contact" with her. Feeling extremely uneasy he tries in vain to make conversation with her - talks about random things such as picking berries and mushrooms, reads poetry, shows off his singing and dancing abilities (in a very comical way), but Kalugina gets annoyed and severely criticizes all his attempts to impress her. Eventually Novoseltsev becomes frustrated, flares up and tells Kalugina right in her face that he considers her dry, inhuman and heartless.

The key subplot is the drab uniformity of Brezhnev era public architecture. This is made explicit in a humorous animated prologue, in which architects are overruled by politicians and red tape. This results in the entire planet being polluted with identical, unimaginative multistory apartment buildings of the sort that can, in fact, be found in every city, town, and suburb across the former Soviet Union. These buildings are uniform right down to the door key of each apartment. The rest of the film is live-action.
