In Montauban in 1944, during the German retreat from France, Julien Dandieu is an ageing, embittered surgeon in the local hospital. Frightened by the German army entering Montauban, Dandieu asks his friend Francois to drive his wife and his daughter to the remote village where he owns a chateau. One week later, Dandieu sets off to meet them for the weekend, but the Germans have now occupied the village. He finds that all the villagers have been herded into the church and shot. In the château, he finds his daughter shot and his wife immolated by a flame-thrower.

The film is about Artur Ludvik, alias Gerard, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of Czechoslovakia. He realizes he is being watched and followed. One day, he is arrested and put into jail by an organisation that declares itself "above the ruling party" and put in solitary confinement for months without being told the reason why. Through brainwashing techniques, including sleep deprivation and being forced to walk back and forth all the time, he is slowly pressured into confessing imaginary crimes, including treason, and to repeat this confession in a public court. Years later, he meets his now demoted tormentor, who tries to downplay his role at that time.

Christopher Joett, sympathique mauvais garçon au grand cœur, porte la poisse à son entourage, ce qui lui a valu le surnom de « Lucky Jo ». À sa sortie de prison, personne ne veut plus « monter de coups » avec lui. Seul, son ami Simon accepte de le recevoir. Ce dernier, reconverti en garagiste à Bougival, prête une Peugeot 404 à Jo pour qu'il aille revoir Mimi, son ancienne petite amie chanteuse dans un beuglant de Pigalle. Pendant que Jo fête ses retrouvailles avec sa belle, la malchance frappe de nouveau : des gangsters volent la 404 pour commettre un braquage et la police a aussitôt fait de retrouver le propriétaire du véhicule, le garagiste Simon…
