Lewis Martin (1 November 1895, San Francisco – 21 February 1969, Los Angeles) was an American actor.

Lewis Martin made his first Broadway appearance during 1925 in the play Lucky Sam McCarver. His career at the Broadway was long and successful, he appeared in over 16 plays between 1925 and 1950. His film and television career started in 1950 with a supporting role in the Kraft Television Theatre. His first film was The Blazing Sun. He played supporting roles in films like War of the Worlds (as Pastor Collins), The Court Jester (as Sir Finsdale) and Diary of a Madman (as Father Raymonde). Martin often played respectable figures like police officers, military mens, judges or priests.

Martin also appeared in numerous television series of the 1950s and 1960s, including Judge Libbott in four episodes of Perry Mason and Professor Henderson in three episodes of The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show. His last role was Commissioner West in two episodes of Tarzan in 1967.

Biography

Démarrant sa carrière d'acteur au théâtre, il joue notamment à Broadway (New York), où il débute en 1925 dans Lucky Sam McCarver de Sidney Howard (avec John Cromwell dans le rôle-titre). Là, suivent seize autres pièces jusqu'en 1948, dont La Nuit des rois de William Shakespeare (1930, avec Joyce Carey et Walter Kingsford), Abe Lincoln in Illinois de Robert E. Sherwood (1938-1939, avec Raymond Massey dans le rôle-titre) et Jeanne de Lorraine de Maxwell Anderson (1946-1947, avec Ingrid Bergman dans le rôle-titre).

Toujours à Broadway, s'ajoute la comédie musicale L'École des maris (adaptation de la pièce éponyme de Molière, avec Osgood Perkins et George Macready), représentée en 1933-1934.

Venu au cinéma sur le tard (à 55 ans), Lewis Martin contribue à quarante-quatre films américains (dont des westerns), les trois premiers sortis en 1950. Mentionnons Le Gouffre aux chimères de Billy Wilder (1951, avec Kirk Douglas et Jan Sterling), La Guerre des mondes de Byron Haskin (1953, avec Gene Barry et Ann Robinson), Passé perdu de Roy Rowland (1956, avec James Cagney et Barbara Stanwyck) et L'Étrange Histoire du juge Cordier de Reginald Le Borg (avec Vincent Price et Nancy Kovack), son dernier film sorti en 1963.

À la télévision enfin, excepté un téléfilm diffusé en 1959, il apparaît surtout dans soixante-dix séries dès 1949, dont La Flèche brisée (un épisode, 1957) et Perry Mason (quatre épisodes, 1960-1963).

Sa dernière série est Tarzan, avec deux épisodes diffusés en 1967.
