David Lindell (Birger Malmsten) and Maggi (Barbro Kollberg) are not lucky. David landed in prison, but now wants to start a new life. Maggi aimed to be an actress, but got pregnant during a chance encounter and has now fled to a provincial town to give herself a second chance. The lovers represent everything the straitlaced society rejects. Yet even when people take advantage of them, when the couple are accused of theft, when they are thrown out of their apartment – at least they seem to have a guardian angel, who appears in the unlikely form of the “Man with the Umbrella”.

Erik Berger (McGoohan) is a reticent, socially withdrawn man who has been working for 20 years in the same Post Office in a Swedish town, not socialising with colleagues and interested only in his wife Helen (McKenna) and son. A young woman is playing the piano at a wild party. When asked to play a special tune, she begins but stops abruptly and rushes out, visibly upset. Alone she starts to walk home through late night central Stockholm. Crossing a bridge, she has a conversation with a drunk artist, and after his persuasion, out of kindness, she buys a sketch that he offers. Arriving at her apartment, she straps a rope to the ceiling and hangs herself. The next morning her body is found by a housekeeper.
