Marie Epstein (born Marie-Antonine Epstein; 14 August 1899, Warsaw - 24 April 1995, Paris) was an actress, scenarist, film director, and film preservationist. Her career is distinguished by three important collaborations. Throughout the 1920s, she acted in and wrote scenarios for films directed by her brother, Jean Epstein. From the 1920s through the early 1950s, she collaborated with the director Jean Benoit-Lévy on sixteen films, serving variously as a writer, assistant director, and co-director. From the early 1950s to her retirement in 1977, Epstein served as a film preservationist at the Cinémathèque française.

Biography
Sœur cadette du réalisateur Jean Epstein avec qui elle partage très jeune la passion du cinéma, elle grandit avec sa famille à Lausanne puis à Lyon à partir de 1914. En 1921, elle s'installe avec son frère Jean à Paris où tous s’investissent rapidement dans la création de films grâce à la rencontre avec le producteur et réalisateur Jean Benoit-Lévy. Marie Epstein, aux côtés de son frère et Jean Benoit-Lévy, devient ainsi l'une des pionnières du cinéma à la fois en tant que scénariste, réalisatrice et actrice.La carrière cinématographique de Marie Epstein s'arrête dans les années 1940. En tant que juive, elle est arrêtée par la Gestapo en février 1944, et condamnée à la déportation. Elle en échappe finalement, grâce à l'intercession de l'actrice Orane Demazis.

Marie (Gina Manès) was an orphan adopted by a bar-owner and his wife in the port of Marseille, and now she is harshly exploited by them as a servant in the bar. She is desired by Petit Paul (Edmond van Daële), a thuggish layabout, but is secretly in love with Jean (Léon Mathot), a dockworker. Marie is forced to leave with Petit Paul, but Jean follows them to a fairground where the two men fight. In the brawl a policeman is stabbed and, while Petit Paul escapes, Jean is arrested and gaoled. A year later, Jean rediscovers Marie, now with a sick baby and living with Petit Paul, who spends all their money on drink. Jean tries to support Marie, aided by a crippled woman (Marie Epstein, credited as "Mlle Marice"), who lives next door; but Petit Paul, warned by gossiping neighbours that Jean is seeing Marie, returns for a violent confrontation, this time armed with a gun. In the ensuing struggle, the crippled woman obtains the gun and kills Petit Paul. In an epilogue, we see Jean and Marie finally free to love each other, though their faces suggest that experience has taken its toll on their lives.

Rose, a girl from a well off family faces a series of tragic events that leaves her penniless and without a home. She is hired as an attendant at a day-care center in Paris with 150 poor children. She finds herself tenderly caring for them and soon they become very fond of her. One young girl named Marie, who is the abandoned daughter of a prostitute, becomes so attached to Rose that she becomes jealous when anyone else steals Rose's attention.
