Rolf de Heer (born 4 May 1951) is a Dutch Australian film director. De Heer was born in Heemskerk in the Netherlands but migrated to Sydney when he was eight years old. He attended the Australian Film, Television and Radio School in Sydney. His company is called Vertigo Productions and is based in Adelaide. De Heer primarily makes alternative or arthouse films. According to the jacket notes of the videotape, de Heer holds the honor of co-producing and directing the only motion picture, Dingo, in which the jazz legend Miles Davis appears as an actor. Miles Davis collaborated with Michel Legrand on the score. He is the subject of the book Dutch Tilt, Aussie Auteur: The Films of Rolf de Heer (First edition – Saarbrücken, Germany: VDM, 2009. Après avoir travaillé pendant sept ans à l'Australian Broadcasting Corporation, il étudie à l'école du cinéma, de la télévision et de la radio, puis réalise en 1984 son premier film, Sur les ailes du tigre, un film pour les enfants qui est projeté à la Berlinale avant de rencontrer un succès à la fois critique et commercial. Après un film de science-fiction, Encounter at Raven's Gate, il réalise en 1991 Dingo, un film peu convaincant avec Miles Davis dans lequel ce dernier interprète son propre rôle. Il s'attaque ensuite au thème de l'enfance avec Bad Boy Bubby en 1993, remportant des prix importants (Mostra de Venise, AFI Awards), puis La Chambre tranquille en 1996, pour lequel il est sélectionné au Festival de Cannes.
En 1998, il signe le déconcertant Dance Me to My Song (lui aussi sélectionné à Cannes), qui raconte l'idylle entre une paraplégique et un aide soignant. Il réalise ensuite l'adaptation du Vieux qui lisait des romans d'amour, roman de Luis Sepulveda, tourné en Guyane française avec Richard Dreyfuss dans le premier rôle. En tournant The Tracker en 2002, il s'intéresse ensuite à l'histoire des aborigènes et rencontre David Gulpilil, qui l'entraînera ensuite dans l'aventure de 10 canoës, 150 lances et 3 épouses.
En 2015 il préside le jury des longs métrages de la compétition internationale du 34e Festival international du film d'Istanbul.

Charlie, an Aboriginal man who lives in Arnhem Land paints tree barks and fishes barramundi fish, all the while feeling out of place in an Australia which is no longer his. After his spear is confiscated by the police who think it is a weapon, he decides to leave his Aboriginal community and go to the bush. He falls ill and is rushed to the hospital in Darwin. Shortly after, he befriends a woman who buys alcohol illegally for other Aboriginals, and he gets arrested. As a result, he is sent to prison.

The film is set in Arnhem Land, in a time before Western contact, and tells the story of a group of ten men hunting goose eggs. The leader of the group, Minygululu, tells the young Dayindi (Jamie Gulpilil) a story about another young man even further back in time who, like Dayindi, coveted his elder brother's youngest wife. The sequences featuring Dayindi and the hunt are in black and white, while shots set in distant past are in colour. All protagonists speak in indigenous languages of the Yolŋu Matha language group, with subtitles. The film is narrated in English by David Gulpilil, although versions of the film without narration, and featuring narration in Yolŋu Matha, are also available.

Upon returning home from work on his birthday, Steve—a middle class husband and father of two—finds the house dark and his family not home. He notices a chair, his television set, and a video tape obviously set out for his viewing. He turns the TV and VCR on, and begins to watch a tape made for him by his wife, Alexandra. The first clip shows his wife and children wishing him a happy birthday, but after the kids leave the room, Alexandra begins a striptease, and it appears to be nothing more than a birthday gift. As it progresses, however, it becomes clear that the tape is designed to humiliate and torture Steve for marital problems that Alexandra has been stewing about for years. While listening to his wife's complaints, he confirms his insensitivity by responding to the TV, "There's nothing here that a little Prozac wouldn't fix." As part of her show, Alexandra feigns breast cancer, has sex with their neighbor, and tells Steve that neither she nor their two children are ever coming home.

The film tells the story of a young female (Birve) that was sent from the planet Epsilon to judge how humans have managed the planet. She crash lands naked in a desert, but is found by a surveyor (Brisbane) who gives her some clothes. She informs the surveyor that other alien races consider humans to be failures that suffer from carelessness and greed. The Quiet Room centers on an unnamed little girl and how she deals with her parents' crumbling marriage. The film focuses entirely on her point of view and although she is silent for most of the film, we constantly hear her thoughts, sometimes in a stream of conscious barrage of voice-over. The little girl has chosen to become mute as a way to protest her parents' constant fighting. Her parents, more concerned with their own issues, believe their daughter is just going through a phase. The film shows how even very young children can be extremely cognizant of problems that are going on in their own homes even when their parents try hard to shield them from everything.

John "Dingo" Anderson vit au fond du bush australien, loin de tout. Un jour, un jet privé transportant le trompettiste de jazz légendaire Billy Cross (Miles Davis), de même que ses musiciens, se pose au milieu du désert australien, entre deux concerts internationaux, pour réparer une avarie. Billy Cross improvise alors un petit concert au milieu du désert pour quelques spectateurs privilégiés qui se trouvent là par hasard. John Anderson tombe instantanément sous son charme, et se prend d'une passion pour le célèbre trompettiste et sa musique. Il aspire dès lors à jouer au moins une fois en duo de trompettes avec son idole, devant le public averti d'un club de Jazz parisien. Presque arrivé à l'âge de trente-trois ans, plusieurs années après avoir croisé pour la première fois le grand trompettiste, il se décide enfin à partir pour Paris, dans l'espoir de concrétiser son rêve. On a farming property called Raven's Gate, enthusiastic hydroponicist Richard Cleary (Ritchie Singer) is trying innovative farming practices. He is also trying to accommodate his brother Eddie (Steven Vidler), newly out of gaol and more interested in Richard's wife Rachel (Celine Griffin) than in working on the property. Strange events on the property and a minor crime in the town attract policeman Taylor (Max Cullen) and Special Branch investigator Cummings (Terry Camilleri). Eddie has the misfortune to also cross local cop Skinner (Vincent Gil), by dating the target of his affections, barmaid Annie (Saturday Rosenberg). Tensions in personal relationships and mysterious events (bird kills, disappearing water supplies) build to a climax that sees Raven's Gate assaulted by an alien force, and a number of deaths amongst the protagonists. The film closes with the stunned survivors Eddie and Rachel standing outside Raven's Gate homestead, newly restored by Special Branch, and the soundtrack playing the Easybeats song Friday on My Mind.
