Tom Gilroy is a writer/director/producer/actor from Ridgefield, Connecticut.
He has appeared in over 30 films, including Girls Town (1996) & Land and Freedom in 1996, Ratchet in 1998, Wedding Photo in 2004 and Harry + Max in 2005.
He has written, directed and produced two award winning films—the short Touch Base (IFC/BRAVO) and the critically acclaimed feature Spring Forward (IFC/MGM) starring Liev Schreiber, Ned Beatty, and Campbell Scott, which won a Toronto International Film Festival Discovery Award.
In 1990 he took part in a series of short films known as Direct Effect, alongside Michael Stipe, to raise awareness of drug-related issues.

In the aftermath of World War I, Inge Altenberg (Elizabeth Reaser), an orphan from Snåsa, Norway, arrives in America to a very cold reception. The parents of immigrant farmer Olaf Torvik (Tim Guinee) remain in Norway, where they met her. Dialogue reveals that the four of them have worked out an agreement that allowed her to emigrate to America for the purpose of marrying Olaf. The Minnesota farming village of Audubon, in which her intended husband lives, is horrified to learn that she is a German immigrant with no papers. To make matters worse, she has accidentally obtained membership papers for the American Socialist Party. Scandalized, both the town's Lutheran minister and the county clerk refuse to marry them.

The plot takes place on a day in Brooklyn. The film is shot in the style of a reality TV series. Five new contestants are selected in a random lottery and, along with the winner of the previous series, comprise the six Contenders. The film purposely leaves many key details unexplained, as the viewer is supposed to be watching only what the creators actually aired in the fictional TV show. How the show became so powerful as to randomly select people to be killed is unexplained, but the Contenders treat it as something they cannot control. Contenders are given a pistol, though they may acquire other weapons, and the last one left alive is the winner. Contestants are forced to play the game, regardless of their wishes. A contender who wins three tours of the game is freed from it.
