Synopsis
Honest Plush Brannon (Wallace Beery) is a confidence man from the Barbary Coast in San Francisco. He is engaged to Li'l Damish (Binnie Barnes) who is a saloon owner. Plush is in need of money to prove he can stand on his own. His plan to come by some money is disturbed by his ex-companion, Duke Cleat (John Carradine), who accuses Plush of doing him wrong in the past. After a quick showdown, Plush manages to shoot and wound Duke badly. Because of this, Plush is forced to leave town, and decides to take the train to Denver to find his luck. Aboard the train he meets an industrial railroad Millionaire, Bradford Bellamy I (Donald Meek) and convinces him he is about to serve the man in a blackmailing process. Bellamy I wants to throw Plush off the train, but instead they make a deal, that Plush will hold a speech in Bellamy I's name in Gold Town. Plush pretends to be Bellamy I's financial voice and is greeted as such in Gold Town. Even his old partner with whom he used to rob stage coaches, Johnny Adair (Ray Collins), believes him. Johnny's daughter, Portia (Frances Rafferty) is engaged to Bellamy I's grandson, Bradford Bellamy III (Bruce Kellogg). When Plush is attending a ceremony and is about to dedicate a cornerstone in the city, he accidentally discovers that the stone has gold in it. Plush prevents an article declaring that Bellamy III is engaging another woman, an Eastern debutante, to reach the press, and since Bellamy III have no intentions of engaging anyone but Portia, he is grateful to Plush. When the gold finding in the cornerstone is confirmed, Plush clais the ground where the stone is, and everyone in Gold Town wants to invest in his newly founded gold-mining company. Back in San Francisco, Duke has recovered from his injuries and seeks revenge. He finds out about Plush's luck, and at gun-point he forces Plush to give all his earnings to him. Broke and homeless, Plush is forced to rob a Wells Fargo payroll stagecoach. He leaves a poem at the crime scene, and after a few more robberies, he is known as the outlaw "Jingle Bill". The only stage coach that never gets robbed is the one Johnny drives. Plush uses his booty to start up the mining for gold in his company, and soon enough he strikes gold. In an attempt to catch the robber, Plush is forced to stage a robbery against Johnny's coach, in which Plush participates. Plush is shot and wounded by Johnny. Meanwhile, Li'l has come to Gold Town to warn Plush that Duke has been at her place, stolen a bunch of Plush's poems, and is headed to Gold Town. After the fake robbery, suspicion falls on Plush to be the robber. When Duke confronts Plush in the street, the two men once again have a showdown, ultimately shooting each other. Duke dies from his wounds, and the stolen poems are found on his body. Duke is taken for Jingle Bill, but Plush steps up and confesses he is the robber. He waves goodbye to Li'l, Bellamy III and Portia, as he is off to serve a one-year sentence in prison.Actors

De retour d'Orient la jeune Ann Carrington se rend en taxi au manoir de son père qu'elle ne connait pas en compagnie de son amie Gail Richards. En chemin un mystérieux tireur embusqué fait éclater les pneus du taxi qui verse dans le fossé. Personne n'est blessé, mais le chauffeur de taxi laisse les deux jeunes femmes pendant qu'il s'en va chercher des secours. Celui-ci tardant à revenir, ils se font prendre (pratiquement de force) en stop par Topper et son chauffeur. Arrivé au manoir le médecin de famille met en garde Ann sur le fait que son père n'en a plus pour longtemps et qu'il ne fait pas le fatiguer. L'aspect morgue et lugubre des gens de maison de Carrington les amuse plutôt qu'autre chose, mais en passant sous un immense plafonnier celui-ci se dégringole et manque de justesse de s'écraser sur Ann. Les deux jeunes femmes sont logées dans de luxueuses chambres mais par caprice se les échangent. La nuit un mystérieux personnage pénètre dans la chambre d'Ann (qui n'y est donc pas) et poignarde à mort Gail. Le fantôme de Gail se détache de son corps et se rend chez Topper en l'obligeant à l'aider à retrouver son assassin. Le chauffeur de ce dernier qui les a accompagnés est terrorisé par le personnage invisible de Gail qui laisse des traces de pas sur le sol enneigé, prend la fuite et retourne chez ses maîtres. Madame Topper l'interroge et scandalisée par cette escapade nocturne de son mari s'en va à son tour chez les Carrington avec sa bonne et son chauffeur. Chez les Carrington, Gail et Topper retrouvent le corps assassiné, mais ce dernier se fait surprendre, finit par parler d'un cadavre, mais celui-ci vient de disparaître. Il s'ensuit un impressionnant et long chassé-croisé de tous ces personnages qui se croisent, se cachent, disparaissent, reviennent et passent par des passages secrets, d'autant qu'il faut maintenant y ajouter le chauffeur de taxi revenu toucher le prix de sa course et l'inspecteur de police accompagné de policiers. Le chauffeur de Topper disparaît dans une trappe, tombe dans un égout et voit des mystérieux personnages embarquer le cadavre de Gail. Finalement Topper arrivera à confondre l'assassin qui n'est autre que la personne qui se faisait passer pour le père d'Ann, (avec la complicité de la bonne) il prendra la fuite poursuivi en voiture par le fantôme de Gail et victime d'un accident il deviendra fantôme à son tour.

Geoffrey West and Marion Ferguson (Grant Withers and Loretta Young), two American tourists in London, meet each other at a London hotel while eating breakfast. Both are reading the personal columns of The Times. The next day Withers inserts an ad, under the alias of Lord Strawberries, which requests her friendship. Ferguson, using the alias of Lady Grapefruit, places an ad in reply which suggests that he write a series of five letters proving himself worth knowing. West makes up a fabulous story about a murder mystery based on the things he has heard his upstairs neighbors arguing about. Ferguson's aunt, who disapproves of West, suspects West is the murderer and contacts Scotland Yard. West's neighbor (the one he mentioned in his letters) is found dead and the police immediately suspect West and Ferguson as being involved in the murder. The real murderer, when he hears they are prime suspects, then attempts to frame them.

A young doctor (William Collier Jr) is accused by his pretty wife (Audrey Ferris) of paying too much attention to one of his woman patients (Margaret Livingston) when she makes a pass at him. Ferris, assuming that her husband is having an affair, decide to have one herself with a perfumer, played by George Beranger. Wife and husband make up but they soon quarrel once again when the jealous wife finds her husband at a cafe with Livingston. Ferris decides to leave her husband and starts going out with Beranger to wild parties. Eventually, Ferris decides that she truly loves Collier and can't live without him. They are reconciled and Ferris returns to her husband.

Act I Hattie Maloney owns a night club in the Panama Canal Zone where she also performs. Three sailors from the S. S. Idaho, Skat Briggs, Windy Deegan and Woozy Hoga, ask her to sing at a party they are organizing ("Join It Right Away"). Nick Bullet, Hattie’s fiance, is a wealthy Navy officer. They are about to meet his eight-year-old daughter Geraldine (Jerry), off the boat from Philadelphia. He tells Hattie, "My Mother Would Love You". Hattie, eager to make a good impression on her prospective stepdaughter, spends three weeks' wages on her elaborately frilly outfit. But when she arrives, Jerry makes fun of Hattie's clothing and way of speaking. Feeling that her marriage is off, Hattie gets drunk on rum ("I’ve still Got my Health"). Kitty-Belle, the daughter of Admiral Whitney Randolph, wants to marry Nick, and she schemes to end his romance with Hattie.

Flo and Dot work in a Broadway music shop. Flo sings while Dot plays the piano. Their boss complains to them that they are not selling as much sheet music as they should, will have to change their technique. Flo sings a song for a customer, after which, one of Dot's admirers, Monsieur LeMaire (Charles Judels), an eccentric Frenchman who owns a modiste shop, enters the shop. He begins annoying the boss by chatting with Dot and asking her out. When the boss tells him to come back after they finish working, LeMaire flies into a rage and throws sheet music all over the store. The boss immediately fires Dot and Flo. The scene moves to the apartment where the two women live. Dot is reading the newspaper and finds out her boyfriend has eloped with a rich elderly widow. She is so angry that she accepts Flo's idea that they become gold-diggers. Flo suggests that their first victim be LeMaire and the next day they begin to work for him. LeMaire soon asks Dot and Flo to a private party. Flo tells him they would love to attend but they have no suitable clothes. LeMaire tells them that they can borrow clothes from his modiste shop. Dot and Flo agree to attend the party and then pack off all the clothes they can carry with them. They head off to the train station with their luggage of expensive clothes and decide to go to Havana to make some real money.
