The plot of the film is based on the concept of Reincarnation and a beautiful love story. Newly married couple Gopinath (Akkineni) and Radha (Savitri) are on Honeymoon and traveling in a boat in River Godavari. Gopinath cries to the boatman to stop the boat as there were dangerous Whirlpools ahead. On reaching the shores, Gopinath takes Radha to an old building. The boatman tells them that it belonged to a Zamindar and takes them to the Samadhis, which reportedly belong to that of one Gopi and Radha. They, then, find an old lady lighting deepam at the Samadhis. Gopinath recognises that she is none other than Gowri from his earlier birth. Gowri too recognised him as Gopi and breaths her last in his hands. The main story is narrated as flashback by Gopinath to Radha.

Gundamma (Suryakantam) is a rich widow who has a daughter Saroja (Jamuna Ramanarao), and son Prabhakar (Haranath) and a step daughter Lakshmi (Savitri). Both the girls are beautiful and intelligent. Saroja is a teen spoiled by her mother's pampering whereas Lakshmi is treated as a servant in her own house. Ramabhadraiah (S. V. Ranga Rao), who has two sons of marriageable age, is searching for suitable brides. Gundamma is interested in pursuing an alliance with Ramabhadraiah’s family for her daughter Saroja and sends a word through a middle man. It happens that he used to be a good friend of Gundamma's late husband. She wants to overcome the obstacle of her elder step daughter by getting her married to a down-and-out guy so she doesn’t have to get jeered for neglecting her step daughter. Kanchu Gantaiah (Ramana Reddy), Gundamma's manager and a cousin somehow wants Saroja to marry his son Bhupati (Rajanala) who happens to be a delinquent and is in a prison.

Bheemasena Rao (SV Rangarao) is a dignified and respectful man. His son (R. Nageswara Rao) works in Military services. His daughter is Rukmini (Jamuna). His close friend and relative Salahala Rao (Ramana Reddy) is trying to arrange marriage to his daughter. Krishna Rao (Akkineni) is his relative of Salahala Rao. Subhadra (the sister of Balarama and Krishna) marries a Pandava named Arjuna, and their son Abhimanyu falls in love with Balarama's daughter, Sasirekha. The families decide to marry them when they reach adulthood. By the time Abhimanyu and Sasirekha grow up, the Pandavas have lost a dice game to the Kauravas due to Sakuni's manipulation. Krishna, furious at an action of Dussasana that has insulted Draupadi, saves Draupadi. Balarama teaches the Kauravas a lesson and later reaches Hastinapuram. Sakuni and Duryodhana respect Balarama; after manipulating him, they seek his favour by requesting that Sasirekha be married to Duryodhana's son Lakshmana Kumara. They intend to force Balarama and Krishna to support them if the Pandavas wage war after their fourteen-year exile. Unaware of this, Balarama accepts.

The movie revolves around a Joint family with its many problems and advantages and explicitly show how some people take advantage of the situation to create confusion. But Unity is Strength is the principle motivating factor. Kutumba Rao (SV Rangarao) and his wife Kamala (Kannamba) played the role of the eldest members of the family. Satyam (ANR) and his wife, Suseela (Savitri), imposes strict rules on the family and takes care of the well being of everybody in it. Ramanayya's wife, Anasuya (Suryakantham) grows jealous of Suseela. Her distant relative Vaikuntam (Jaggaiah) starts spreading his evil influence over the family. Satyam fights for the family and brings about the evil-doings of Vaikuntam to the notice of Kutumba Rao. The family reunites to live together at the end.

Zamindar of a village has no children and adopts a boy from an Orphanage. The boy grows up as Anandarao (NTR) and returns to the village after higher education. Zamindar, while dying, hands over the estate affairs to Ramaiah (Doraiswamy), who gains good reputation and prestige. He has a son Satyam (ANR) and a daughter Sundaramma (Savitri). Anandrao feels jealous about Ramaiah. Chalapathi (Ramana Reddy) and Pitchaiah (Chadalavada) adds to his jealousy. He insults Ramaiah and stops the donation programme running on the name of Zamindar. Satyam as an unemployee joins as Bus conductor and Ramaiah dies of helplessness. Anandrao purchases the Bus and dismisses Satyam from the job. Chalapathi insults Sundaramma and angered Satyam beats him and goes to jail. Chalapathi and Pitchaiah steal the adoption papers from Anandrao and tries to dismiss him. He joins the Annadana Samajam. This brings about The Change (Parivartana) in him and repents for the injustice done to the Ramaiah family. Sundaramma recognizes the change in his mindset and starts loving him. Satyam recognizes the love affair between them, and recollects the documents from Pitchaiah and provides them in the court. Chalapathi and Pitchaiah are arrested and Anandrao and Sundaramma married happily.
