Struggling actor William McFly (Cliff Robertson) is hired by wealthy Cecil Fox (Rex Harrison) to play his personal secretary for a practical joke. Pretending to be on his deathbed, Fox invites three former lovers to his Venetian palazzo for a final visit: penniless Princess Dominique (Capucine), fading movie star Merle McGill (Edie Adams), and Texas millionairess Mrs. Lone Star Crockett Sheridan (Susan Hayward). After the Battle of Pharsalus where Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison) has defeated Pompey, Pompey flees to Egypt, hoping to enlist the support of the young Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII (Richard O'Sullivan) and his sister Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor). The Romans hold, and the armies of Mithridates arrive on Egyptian soil. The following day, Caesar passes judgment. A charming British anthropology Professor Bruce Patterson (Terry-Thomas) has to live with Helen Bushmill (Celeste Holm), his fiancée. À Paris, en 1896, Simone Pistache, directrice et meneuse de revues du cabaret Bal du Paradis à Montmartre, brave la censure en présentant le cancan, une danse qu’une ligue de dames vertueuses a déclarée « obscène et lascive » (sic) bien que ces dames ne l’aient jamais vue. François Durnais, avocat et amant de Simone, est censé avoir négocié un accord avec la police, mais celle-ci fait irruption à chaque tentative de représentation. Lors du procès, le président du tribunal, Paul Barrière (un ami de François), apprend que c’est l’un des juges de sa cour qui a validé la plainte : le jeune et nouveau Philippe Forestier. Un soir, lorsque ce dernier se rend incognito au Bal du Paradis pour constater le délit, il fait la connaissance de Simone et en tombe amoureux. Une rivalité s’érige entre Durnais et Forestier. Simone est très liée à Durnais, mais contrariée, car ce dernier fait du refus du mariage une question de principe. Forestier propose plusieurs rendez-vous à Simone, mais elle temporise jusqu’à ce qu’il lui demande de l’épouser. Simone accepte, stupéfaite de se voir spontanément offrir ce que Durnais lui a toujours refusé. Durnais, avec la complicité de Barrière, cherche alors un plan pour rompre leurs fiançailles. Invité à la réception donnée sur une péniche par Forestier pour présenter sa future épouse à son distingué entourage, Durnais profite de l’appréhension de Simone d’être confrontée à la gent bourgeoise pour lui faire exagérément boire du champagne avant de la pousser à exécuter un numéro de cabaret qui scandalise l’assistance. Simone réalise que sa prestation a compromis son mariage et s’enfuit en regagnant les quais à la nage. Elle imagine un stratagème pour se venger de Durnais : elle lui demande de lui prêter de l’argent en contrepartie de quoi elle lui fait signer un document stipulant qu’il restera propriétaire du Bal du Paradis tant que l’argent ne lui sera pas remboursé. Quand le cancan est représenté au cabaret, la police fait une descente et arrête son propriétaire, Durnais en l’occurrence. Celui-ci passe au tribunal, et Simone, estimant que sa vengeance va trop loin, refuse de l’enfoncer davantage, mais ne veut plus avoir affaire à lui. Durnais a finalement recours à un subterfuge pour reconquérir Simone et lui faire enfin sa demande en mariage.

Robert Dean (Clifton Webb) is an old-fashioned psychologist who reluctantly allows his oldest daughter Meg (Jill St. John) to join a four-week tour in São Paulo before returning to college in America. Paris, 1922. Jake Barnes vit à Paris depuis sa démobilisation de la guerre 14/18 et il est journaliste au « New York Herald ». Un soir, il se rend à un bal musette où il retrouve des amis dont le romancier Robert Cohn. Arrive Lady Brett Ashley qui n’est pas une inconnue pour Jake. Elle fut son infirmière à l’hôpital pendant la guerre où ils tombèrent amoureux mais à la suite de sa blessure contractée sur le champ de bataille, Jake est devenu impuissant. Depuis, ils entretiennent une amitié amoureuse. Pour tenter d’oublier cette déconvenue Brett multiplie les aventures. Elle a promis d’épouser un Écossais Mike Campbell, joyeux drille plutôt porté sur la bouteille, tout en étant très courtisée notamment par Robert Cohn qui tombe immédiatement fou d’elle. En compagnie de son ancien compagnon d’armes, Bill Gorton, Jake part à Pampelune en Espagne assister aux corridas. À peine arrivé aux fêtes de la San Fermin, Jake a la surprise de retrouver Brett entourée de tous ses prétendants. Le groupe ne se quitte plus, et participe à toutes les festivités : débarquement des taureaux, encierro à travers les rues, corrida… Brett se laisse courtiser par un jeune torero, Pedro Romero, sous le regard furieux de Robert qui finit par agresser le jeune homme. Le lendemain, Pedro triomphe aux arènes et Jake apprend que Brett s’est enfuie en compagnie du torero. Pour Robert et Mike, la fête est finie. C’est à Biarritz que Jake reçoit des nouvelles de Brett, elle lui lance un appel de détresse espérant démarrer une nouvelle vie avec lui.
