Le jeune sous-lieutenant Ivlev qui vient d'être enrôlé dans l'Armée rouge à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale arrive à Berlin. La capitale du Troisième Reich, à quelques jours de la capitulation, est totalement détruite. Des soldats soviétiques rencontrent en plein combat dans la rue une jeune femme allemande enceinte, Barbara, et reçoivent l'ordre de leur chef de compagnie de la mener à l'hôpital. C'est le jeune sous-lieutenant Ivlev qui est désigné pour l'accompagner. Il prend avec lui un chauffeur et un homme de troupe. La traversée de la ville en ruines sous les bombes par les trois hommes et la jeune Allemande s'apparente à une véritable odyssée.

The Hunter family receive a telegram detailing that the father, James, has been offered a visiting fellowship at Oxford University in England. However, their two children, Peter and Elizabeth, worry about what is to be done with their two dogs, Luath the young Labrador Retriever and Bodger the elderly English Bull Terrier, along with their Siamese cat Tao, while they are away. Family friend John Longridge offers to convince the animals to stay with him at his house in Northwestern Ontario, so that is what is arranged.

Three schoolgirls are infatuated with a yakuza, Katsuta, of the Izu Clan. They meet another yakuza, "Diamond" Fuyu, of the rival Yoshida clan. As he gets a tattoo, two of the girls become squeamish and run off but Hanako, the best friend of the daughter of Sota Izu, boss of the Izu clan, stays to watch. She is intrigued with the yakuza world. Fuyu takes her to an illegal gambling den where Tetsu, a dealer, takes a liking to her. The police raid the den and Hanako is arrested but let off with a warning. Later, Tetsu runs into Hanako on the street and convinces her to help him pull a variant of the badger game, a scam in which, with the promise of sex, she is to lure a man to a hotel room where Tetsu will extort money from him by threat of blackmail. The scam fails when the man chases Testu off and Hanako is left stranded with the man.
