The action unfolds in a shabby New York strip bar in real time. While a bartender dispenses drinks, a topless dancer (Jennifer McDonald) moves listlessly on stage for a handful of patrons: a businessman (David Selby), two hockey fans (Rustam Branaman, Taylor Nichols), and a wheelchair bound old man (Paul Williams). A Man (Raymond J. Barry) enters and announces a stick-up. As the bartender reaches for a gun, the Man shoots and kills him.

Jim Hawkins is a young orphan who lives in the Admiral Benbow in England with his friends Gonzo and Rizzo. Jim listens to the tales of Billy Bones, who tells of his former captain, Captain Flint, who buried his treasure trove on a remote island and executed all of his crew so only he would own the island’s map. One night, one of Bones’ fellow crewmates Blind Pew arrives, giving Bones the black spot. Bones dies of a heart attack, but gives Jim the treasure map beforehand. An army of pirates attack the inn, destroying it, but the boys escape with the map.

The film begins where the original television series finishes, with Gordon Shumway—otherwise known as ALF, short for Alien Life Form—being captured by the US Air Force's Alien Task Force while attempting to depart Earth. ALF is kept under lock and key at Edmonds Air Force Base under the xenophobic orders of Colonel Milfoil (Martin Sheen), although he manages to charm his airman jailers and convert his cell into a bachelor pad.
