Desert Blues is a 2006 documentary film.

Synopsis

Although they come from different ethnic groups, two musicians and one band from Mali come together to make people listen to the desert: Habib Koité, a Bambara whose roots are in the Khassonke culture of western Mali; Afel Bocoum, a Songhai, considered the heir to Ali Farka Touré; and Tartit, an all-female Tuareg group from Timbuktu, ethnically related to the Berber people, that lends its voice to the cause of a subsisting culture. The coming together of these three is an event with true political significance considering the tragic events that shook Mali between 1995 and 1996.

The film features interviews with Perry and her loved ones documenting the trajectory of her life, containing various clips from her childhood and teenage years as well as her career and personal life (ranging from December 1999 to March 2012). The film is spliced with performances from her worldwide California Dreams Tour, which had 127 concerts from February 20, 2011 to January 22, 2012. Most of the performances were recorded on November 23, 2011, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, but also included performances in Tokyo and São Paulo. Some of her friends such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Jessie J make cameos in the film. The documentary includes scenes of Perry dealing with the breakdown of her marriage with English actor/comedian Russell Brand.

À la fin des années 1960, Sixto Rodriguez enregistre deux albums de chansons réalistes (édités par Sussex Records), proches par l'esprit d'un Bob Dylan. Rodriguez est donc contraint de poursuivre son métier d'ouvrier-maçon. Mais, de l'autre côté de l'Atlantique, en Afrique du Sud, sous le régime de l'apartheid, ses disques rencontrent un grand succès auprès de la jeunesse, en particulier blanche. Le paradoxe d'un musicien, point prophète en son pays, et qui, sans le savoir, devient une idole dans une autre contrée. Le film suit l'enquête de deux fans du Cap sur la disparition supposée du chanteur. Toutefois, « loin de dissiper ce mystère, le film l'alimente plutôt ».

Sound City Studios was located in the San Fernando Valley, amidst rows of dilapidated warehouses. The little-known recording studio housed a unique analog Neve recording console and a reputation for recording drums. Artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Kyuss, Slipknot and Nirvana recorded groundbreaking music at the studio. The film tells the story of the studio from its early days in 1969 until its closing in 2011. It then follows Dave Grohl's purchase of the studio's custom analog Neve console, which he moved to his personal studio, Studio 606. Rupert Neve is an English engineer who founded Neve Electronics in 1961, designed and manufactured the Neve 8028, "one of four in the world", and is interviewed by Grohl in the film. Famous musicians who recorded at Sound City reunite at Studio 606 for a jam session and to make an album of "all-new all-original songs, each one composed and recorded exclusively for the film within its own 24-hour session on that console." It also shows album covers by some bands: Red Hot Chili Peppers's One Hot Minute, Nirvana's Incesticide and Nevermind, Rage Against The Machine's self-titled album and many others.
