Synopsis
Nous sommes à la fin du XVIe siècle et, seul la nuit dans son palais, William Shakespeare est assis à sa table de travail. La plume à la main, il paraît vouloir parfaire l'ouvrage qu'il est en train d'écrire (Hamlet), mais ne parvient apparemment pas à trouver les termes qui conviennent. Contempler la lune et flatter sa mappemonde de la main ne lui sont d'aucune aide. C'est de sa réflexion, qu'on voit se frayer à travers les circonvolutions de son cerveau, que naît son inspiration comme s'il était soudainement touché par la grâce divine, et comme ce fut, peut-être, également le cas pour d'autres génies de la littérature, de la science et des arts dont on voit défiler quelques noms : Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Léonard de Vinci, Dante Alighieri, Albert Einstein.Actors

A disoriented man climbs up into the attic of a sorority house while the occupants hold a Christmas party. Jess Bradford (Olivia Hussey) receives an obscene phone call from "the moaner", a man who has recently been calling the house. After she calls sorority friends Barb Coard (Margot Kidder), Phyllis Phyl Carlson (Andrea Martin), Clare Harrison (Lynne Griffin) and the several other girls to listen, he starts saying perverted things to them, until Barb provokes the caller, to which he replies, "I'M GOING TO KILL YOU." Barb and Clare argue about the things she said to him, and Clare leaves. She is then attacked and killed; her body is carried up into the attic, where the killer places her in a rocking chair and puts a doll in her lap.

The film starts as David Clemens (Keir Dullea) is brought to a residential treatment center by his apparently caring mother. He becomes very upset when one of the inmates brushes his hand, as he believes touches can kill him. Cold and distant, he mainly concentrates on his studies, especially that of clocks, which he appears to be obsessed with. We later learn that he has a recurring dream in which he murders people by means of a giant clock.

As an American infantry battalion aboard a troopship prepares to land on Guadalcanal, Charlie Company's First Sergeant Welsh tells Private Doll he had not provided him with reports that Doll insisted that he gave to Welsh. They are overheard by their company commander Captain Stone. The Captain speaks with Welsh privately and tells him that he witnessed Doll hand Welsh the reports. Welsh replies that he knew he did but that war is insanity and the only way the men can survive the upcoming battle is to live with that fact. The Captain informs Welsh he is not pleased with his attitude. Welsh and Doll continue to be at odds with each other over Doll's independent thinking that extends to his stealing a pistol from another soldier that he thinks will give him an edge in surviving. This portion of the story was not in the novel, but was borrowed from James Jones' 1958 novella, "The Pistol.
