Lilli Palmer (24 May 1914 – 27 January 1986), born Lilli Marie Peiser, was a German actress. She won the Volpi Cup, the Deutscher Filmpreis three times, and was nominated twice for a Golden Globe Award.

Biography

Son père, Alfred Peiser, était médecin-chef à l'hôpital juif de Berlin et sa mère, Rose Lissmann, avait été actrice de théâtre avant ses fiançailles. Lilli avait une sœur aînée, l'actrice et chanteuse Irene Prador, et une sœur cadette, Hilde. Quand Lilli Palmer eut quatre ans, sa famille s'installa dans la Hölderlinstraße 11 à Berlin-Westend, où une plaque commémorative orne aujourd'hui leur maison. Ils y restèrent jusqu'en 1932.

En 1943, elle se maria avec l'acteur de théâtre Rex Harrison, dont elle eut un fils en 1944, Rex Carey Alfred Harrison, qui enseigna plus tard à l'Université de Brooklyn. En Amérique, la liaison de Rex Harrison avec Carole Landis, suivi du suicide de la jeune actrice en 1948, provoqua un scandale qui mit fin provisoirement à la carrière hollywoodienne de Lilli. En 1956, Lilli Palmer et Rex Harrison divorcèrent. Lilli se remaria le 21 septembre 1957 avec l'écrivain et acteur argentin Carlos Thompson.

À un âge avancé, Lilli Palmer était réputée être encore extraordinairement belle.

En 1974, elle fit paraître ses mémoires, Dicke Lilli - gutes Kind (Un Bon petit soldat, Paris, 1979), qui furent un best-seller mondial. Elle publia ensuite Der roter Rabe en 1979 (Le Corbeau rouge, Paris, 1980), où elle raconte la relation entre elle-même, son compagnon et sa meilleure amie, suivi de Umarmen hat seine Zeit en 1981 (Les Rivages insolites, Paris 1982), Nachtmusik en 1984, Um eine Nasenlänge en 1984 (Dans l'ombre du bonheur, Paris, 1985), Eine Frau bleibt eine Frau en 1985 et Wenn der Nachtvogel schreit, qui parut après sa mort en 1988. Outre son activité d'écrivain, Lilli Palmer était aussi une artiste-peintre.

Elle succomba à un cancer, à l'âge de 71 ans, à Los Angeles. Elle fut inhumée dans l'intimité. Son époux refusa d'accéder au désir de son fils et de ses belles-filles, qui souhaitaient la faire transférer en Suisse. On avait fait courir le bruit que Lilli Palmer s'était suicidée, et la presse à scandale se répandit en indiscrétions sur sa vie et sur celle du grand amour de sa vie, Carlos Thompson, qui se suicida quatre ans plus tard à Buenos Aires.
